Hearing delayed on Des Moines immigration center

Hearing delayed on Des Moines immigration center

A hearing has been delayed on a proposal to locate a federal immigration enforcement center on the southwest side of downtown Des Moines.

The request from William Nielsen of Capstone Ventures LLC was scheduled for a public hearing at Wednesday’s Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting.

William Lillis, a Des Moines attorney who represents Capstone, asked to delay the hearing until next month because there is one vacancy on the seven-member board, another member was absent, and another member had to leave early.

Board members voted 5-0 to grant the continuance.

City planners have recommended denying a request for a special permit for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, office at 315 S.W. 14th St. The site is located in the Riverpoint district, an area where city officials want commercial, retail and residential redevelopment.

About two dozen members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement turned out Wednesday to oppose any such immigration facility in Des Moines.
