Hidalgo Police Find Drugs In Sewer

HIDALGO - Authorities recovered nearly a dozen bundles of marijuana from a manhole in one neighborhood, and they say it all started with a police officer with good eyes.

"We were checking out a suspicious vehicle parked here at the apartments, after looking in a van we noticed it had a lot of narcotics tools of the trade that we see in vehicles. Whenever we encounter a vehicle near our suspected storm drains used for smuggling, we double check the storm drain to make sure nothing is left behind," says Captain Robert Vela.

Firefighters recovered 11 bundles, but say there are more in the drain and they have to return with proper tools to get them out.

No arrests have been made; the drugs were turned over to border patrol.
