    --

The State Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatal crash that happened about 8 a.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 15/501 in Chatham County near Pittsboro.

Troopers said a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south on U.S. 15/501 near Ruth Lane when it traveled into the median and began to overturn. The Tahoe then continued into the northbound lanes where it traveled into the path of a 2011 Toyota Camry.

The driver of the Camry swerved to the right, avoiding a head-on collision, before coming to rest against the shoulder's guardrail. The Tahoe continued to rollover, landing on top of a 2008 Toyota Camry before coming to a final rest.

As result of the collision, both the driver of the Tahoe and the 2008 Camry died.

The driver of the Tahoe was identified as 18-year-old Yolanda Gonzalez-Saavedra, of Chapel Hill. She was a student at Northwood High School. A 14-year-old passenger, who was Yolanda's sister, was taken to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

    Lt. Col. John Collins

The driver of the 2008 Camry has been identified as John Wade Collins, 44, of Pinehurst. Collins was a lieutenant colonel and was the commander of AFROTC Detachment 590. Collins was also the Chair of the Department of Aerospace Studies at UNC.

The driver of the 2011 Camry, Kelly Felicia Scurlock Cross, 45, of Sanford, was transported to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The school district said it has counselors at the school for students and staff members.

UNC did not release an official statement but said the university is in mourning over Collins' death.

At last check, it was unclear what caused the crash. The investigation continues.]

Spanish is not the native language of the United States., particularly the Carolinas. New Mexico is the only state that recognizes Spanish as an official language, but New Mexicans do not hyphenate as a rule.
    Spanish Surnames

'Last Names' Come From Both Mother and Father

    By Gerald Erichsen
    Spanish Language Expert\

Traditionally, if John Smith and Nancy Jones, who live in an English-speaking country, get married and have a child, he or she would end up with a name such as Chris Smith.

But it's not the same in most areas where Spanish is spoken as the native language. If Juan López Marcos marries María Covas Callas, their child would end up with a name such as Mario López Covas.

The matter of Spanish surnames might seem confusing at first, but that's mostly because it's different.

Although there are numerous variations of how names are handled, just as there can be in English, the basic rule of Spanish names is fairly simple: In general, a person born into a Spanish-speaking family is given a first name followed by two surnames, the first being the father's family name (or, more precisely, the surname he gained from his father) followed by the mother's family name (or, again more precisely, the surname she gained from her father).

Take as an example the name of Teresa García Ramírez. Teresa is the name given atbirth, García is the family name from her father, and Ramírez is the family name from her mother.

If Teresa García Ramírez marries Elí Arroyo López, she doesn't change her name. But it would be extremely common for her to add "de Arroyo" (literally, "of Arroyo"), making her name Teresa García Ramírez de Arroyo.

Sometimes, the two surnames can be separated by y (meaning "and"), although this is less common than it used to be: Elí Arroyo y López.
Sometimes you will see names that are even longer.

Although it isn't done much, at least formally, it is possible also to include grandparents' names in the mix.

Things can get a bit complicated for Spanish-speaking people living in places such as the United States, where it is not the norm to use two family names. One choice many make is for all family members to use the father's paternal family name. Also quite common is to hyphenate the two names, e.g., Elí Arroyo-López and Teresa García-Ramírez. Couples who have been in the United States a long time, particularly if they speak English, are more likely to give their children the father's name, following the dominant U.S. pattern. But practices vary.

The practice of a person being given two family names became the custom in Spain largely because of Arabic influence. The custom spread to the Americas during the years of conquest.
