Taking her hardest line yet against illegal immigrants, Sen. Hillary Clinton told the Daily News she wants U.S. borders secured with a wall or fence, possibly surveillance drones and infrared cameras.

Clinton's proposal - which came just weeks after she blasted Republican crackdowns on illegal immigrants as un-Christian - raised the ire of activists.

But she tempered her remarks by saying that, while she supports a barrier to stem new illegal immigrants, she favors a legalization process for the 11 million undocumented aliens already here.

In an exclusive interview with the News' Michael Goodwin, Clinton said that she envisions a two-stage plan in which border security is beefed up, followed by legalization efforts in a year or two.

"A physical structure is obviously important," the New York Democrat and possible presidential contender told Goodwin. "A wall in certain areas would be appropriate," she said, endorsing a high-tech "smart fence" that could spot people approaching from 200 or 300 yards.

Embracing both conservative and liberal goals, Clinton said said she backs citizenship rather than amnesty for illegal immigrants, as long as it's "earned."

At the same time, she welcomed tougher enforcement of federal laws punishing employers who hire illegal immigrants. Clinton also pooh-poohed a work and school boycott by advocacy groups set for May 1.

At a planning meeting yesterday for a human chain demonstration in the five boroughs that day, immigrant advocates booed Clinton's get-tough stance.

"To see the senator from New York, which is clearly an immigrant state, take a position that harsh is not the real solution," said Gouri Sadhwani, executive director of the New York Civic Participation Project and La Fuente. "The flow of undocumented immigrants into our country will not be stopped by putting up a fence along the Mexican border."

Saul Campoverde, 35, a construction worker from Bushwick, Brooklyn, who came to the U.S. illegally from Ecuador 10 years ago, also ripped the fence plan.

"That would be like clipping the wings off a bird - that would kill many people's dreams of having a better opportunity, future for their families," he said.

Activists were happier with what Clinton had to say last month when she lambasted GOP moves to brand undocumented immigrants as felons.

"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures," she said then. "This bill would literally criminalize the good Samaritan - and probably even Jesus himself."

Re: Hillary Clinton: Border needs wall

I'm so sick of this two-faced American people back stabbing b????. She's trying to play both sides of the fence, and she knows she pissed off too many Americans by speaking in favor of legalizing illegals at one of the protests. Now she's going to do an about face?? She'd never get my vote!!

Hillary Clinton Comes Out for Border Wall

Responding to polls showing that a strong majority of Americans support building a wall across the U.S.-Mexican border, 2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton announced Saturday that she backs a border wall plan that would include both physical barriers and a "smart fence."

"A physical structure is obviously important," Mrs. Clinton told the New York Daily News. "A wall in certain areas would be appropriate."

The News said she also supported deploying a high-tech "smart fence" that could spot people approaching from 200 or 300 yards. Clinton said the deployment of surveillance drones and infrared cameras should be considered as well.

A Time magazine poll released two weeks ago showed that 56 percent of Americans supported building a wall along the entire 2,000 mile U.S.-Mexican border - with only 40 percent opposed.

Still, most immigration reform plans currently being considered by Congress make no mention of a wall. Mrs. Clinton's previous proposals on illegal immigration, detailed extensively on her Senate web site, also ignored the issue.

The former first lady said she welcomed tougher immigration enforcement against employers who hire illegal immigrants. She blasted a planned pro-illegal immigration work and school boycott set for May 1 as a bad idea.

Mrs. Clinton said she favored a carrot and stick approach - with a plan that would first seal the borders followed a year or two later by a legalization process for the 11 million illegal aliens already here.

The top Democrat told the News that she backs citizenship rather than amnesty for illegal immigrants, as long as it's "earned."

But her new get-tough rhetoric on the border wall angered illegal immigration advocates, who were under the impression she was in their corner.

"To see the senator from New York, which is clearly an immigrant state, take a position that harsh is not the real solution," Gouri Sadhwani, executive director of the New York Civic Participation Project and La Fuente, told the News.

"The flow of undocumented immigrants into our country will not be stopped by putting up a fence along the Mexican border," he added.

Clinton's repositioning on border enforcement moves her significantly to the right of President Bush on the issue - and places her in agreement with conservative 2008 presidential hopeful, Sen. George Allen, who came out for a partial border fence two weeks ago.

Despite her new tough tone, Clinton's record on illegal immigration has been inconsistent over the years.

In 2003, for instance, she proclaimed: "I am adamantly against illegal immigrants," saying the U.S. should consider implementing a national ID card to beef up border enforcement.

But in 2005 she voted against a Senate bill that would have expanded illegal immigration detention centers and funded the hiring of new border patrol agents.

Last month, Clinton condemned a House plan that racheted up penalties against illegals and included the construction of a border fence, saying it would "criminalize even Jesus himself."

Last time I heard her other face talk, she said Jesus Christ would be deported if he were here now. She sees hopes of a Presidential Nomination fading, so she's jumped under the same umbrella Bush is under. The same old story, we won't allow any more to come, but we must give our transitional guests that are already here a break.

We are blaming Bush, but Clinton looked the other way for 8 years while the stampede across the border went unchecked. But Bush gave them the green light for this current madness.

What about the statement that a fence will kill hopes and dreams of a better life. I must have missed a meeting where Americans became responsible for providing a better life to every Mexican citizen. That's their Government's responsibility and I wish they would take the matter up with them.

But it does sound like Hillary is leaning more to the right on this issue. Hopefully, the pressure is working.
