HOUSTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush pushed back against more than a dozen protesters who repeatedly heckled him Monday with chants of “No hope without our vote” as he tried to address a national Hispanic business group.

The former Florida governor was forced to halt his speech before the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Houston to remind those shouting that he supports a pathway to citizenship for children of people in the U.S. illegally, a group often called “DREAMers.” They take their name from the acronym for legislation that lays out a process to toward citizenship for immigrant children who were brought into the country illegally and grew up in the U.S.

But like other Republican presidential hopefuls, Bush wants to secure the border with Mexico before dealing with millions of people here illegally. Mary Moreno, communications director of the Texas Organizing Project, which planned Monday’s protest, said her group wanted to call attention to “the hostile atmosphere being created by the GOP field of presidential candidates.”

The demonstrators held large signs, with one asking “Who is the real Jeb Bush?” Another read “One of us?” and was paired alongside one that read “Or one of them?” The latter featured a photo of Bush low-fiving Republican front-runner Donald Trump at last Wednesday’s GOP debate in California.

Bush, whose wife was born in Mexico, supports the long-delayed DREAM Act, which would allow immigrant children who grew up in the U.S. and are living in the country illegally to eventually gain citizenship.

She also said Republican presidential candidates are seeking to “militarize the border” at a time when the U.S. border patrol already has thousands of border patrol agents.

“It’s all crazy talk,” Moreno said.

The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce released a statement denouncing the protests, saying Bush has a record of commitment to Hispanics.

In his speech, Bush said “a great majority of Republicans believe in immigration reform” and slammed Trump’s immigration plan to build a border wall and deport those here illegally before allowing “the good ones” to legally return.

“We don’t need to build a wall. We don’t need to deport everybody in this country (illegally),” said Bush. “It’s not a practical conservative plan.”

“Coming here legally should be easier than coming here illegally,” said Bush, who added that immigration can boost the U.S. economy.

Really, Jeb?! Really Republicans? Are you serious?

This is the "alternative" Scott Walker is supporting, this was his original position until he saw he couldn't advance without going with the Trump Plan. It didn't work for him, because we knew he didn't mean it, so he's out, but he's not supporting the candidate who has the plan he followed, oh no, he's supporting the "alternative", which is a Jeb Bush type plan of Do Nothing, Make It Worse.

Mary Moreno look in the mirror. It's your group who is creating the hostile atmosphere.

According to even Barack Obama, foreign lobbying (yes that is what it is when pleas to government officials are made on behalf of foreign citizens who are also not LPR's) is a major problem that the LAW needs to keep in check! All of these demonstrations, call ins, emailing, protests, etc. are a type of lobbying---and when they are done by non-constituents, or even by actual citizens on BEHALF of foreign constituents,.i.e., neither citizens nor LPR's---it is considered Foreign Lobbying. It is illegal, it should be cracked down on, and we should at least tell Congress that they are in NO WAY to pay heed to unregistered lobbying. This would be like in the monarchy days if foreign ambassadors conducted their enterprises in secret, instead of presenting their views to the monarch.

    Thus saith Barack:
    Mr. Glenn A. Fine
    United States Department of Justice
    950 Pennsylvania Avenue
    Washington, D.C. 20530

    Dear Mr. Fine,July 9, 2008

It has come to our attention that there have been severe lapses in the enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). We would like to know more about the decision-making process behind FARA enforcement and whether or not enforcement has been uneven or lax over time.

As you are well aware, FARA was passed in 1938 and requires disclosure of all lobbying contacts made on behalf of foreign governments, individuals, political parties, and corporations. Disclosure is important in order for the American public to know who is influencing U.S. policy from abroad. Recently, we introduced the Closing the Foreign Lobbying Loophole Act (S. 3123) in order to close two loopholes in the law that allow certain foreign agents to operate without the sunlight of disclosure.

We believe that the requirements under FARA are clear and should be enforced in all circumstances. Violations of the disclosure law that go unpunished can undermine U.S. policy and pose national security risks to the American people. Furthermore, any specter of uneven or lax enforcement can render a very important statute toothless.

We know that you share our commitment to maintaining the public’s trust in government. We believe that allowing individuals to break the law and operate in the dark on behalf of foreign entities will erode this trust we hold so dear. Therefore, we request an examination of the Department’s enforcement record on FARA, including an analysis of all the considerations taken into account when the Department determines whether or how to enforce the law. We hope that you take appropriate steps within your Department to look into the causes of uneven or lax enforcement and provide the Attorney General or his appropriate subordinate with suggestions on how to fix any enforcement problems immediately. We also request that you transmit to us, and the appropriate congressional committees of jurisdiction, a report on your findings.

We look forward to hearing from you on this matter.
