HOUSE DEMOCRATS VOTED TO KEEP FELONY ITEM IN BILL
The Democrats are the ones that voted to keep the felony in the House bill. The Republican's wanted to keep it a misdemeanor, because leaving it a felony (according to Peter King on the O'Reilly Factor) would mean having a lot more judical proceedings before an illegal could be deported. He said the seriousness of a felony charge made the process of deportation slower, and more complicated. That was why a number of Republicans wanted to keep the law what it had always been, a misdemeanor.
But the Dems are protraying the felony charge as being pushed by Republicans. As always with the Democrats, the ends justifies the means.
QUOTE...We Republicans voted to keep it a misdemeanor and 'the great liberal Democrats' voted to make it a felony. Nuns and priests are not targeted in the bill."
He alleged that the Democrats wanted to make the issue political by making the crime a felony. END QUOTE
Congressman Peter King Responds to Criticism of His Original Bill
By D.F. Karppi
Congressman Peter King was aware there was an Immigration Rally outside of his Massapequa headquarters on Sunday, April 9. He said, "They had that right to demonstrate. It was not a problem."
What Mr. King sees as a problem is how the bill is being represented in the country. He said, "There is nothing in the bill which would make it a crime for any church worker, social worker or anyone to give an illegal immigrant shelter or food. It is a total distortion of the bill. That portion was aimed at smuggling gangs and has been on the books for over 5 years or more. It says to aid, assist or encourage someone to come into the country or remain in the country - was aimed in 1989 to smuggling gangs and was approved by the Conference of Bishops.
"We added the word 'assist' at the request of US attorneys who focus on the south west corridor in California and Arizona and is aimed at those gangs and not the church. It is being raised as a phoney issue by them.
"The second thing heard is that we want to make everyone illegal a felon. The original bill already says it is a misdemeanor, and that it should be illegal to stay in the country. There is an amendment to the bill that changed it from a misdemeanor to a felony.
Mr. King continued, saying, "Seventy-five percent of Republicans, about 164, voted to make it a misdemeanor but 192 Democrats voted to make it a felony. We Republicans voted to keep it a misdemeanor and 'the great liberal Democrats' voted to make it a felony. Nuns and priests are not targeted in the bill."
He alleged that the Democrats wanted to make the issue political by making the crime a felony.
Mr. King said, "The rest of the bill is about border control, saying we need agents and military equipment along the border. It is for the 700-mile fence - double fence - along the California and Arizona border. Congressmen Steve Israel and Tim Bishop of Long Island also voted for this. Along the 700-mile fence there will be checkpoints. Already, 400 people have died trying to cross that part of the desert. It is the hardest area to secure and fencing it would direct people to easier areas of patrol."
When asked if he was changing the bill, he said there was no need.
He added that when the Senate sends the bill back to the House the House of Representatives will eliminate the amendment that states that the illegal immigrants are committing a felony and will go back to the original wording, that it is a misdemeanor.

Well, how about that!!
Ironies and Opposites.
Personally, I like the felony part of it.

Frankly, as much as I would like to keep the felony, if it will move the illegals out of the country quicker, I vote for the misdemeanor all the way. I agree with Congressman King on this one.
