Immigration protesters plan march
Houston Chronicle

Activists have planned an "Immigration Rights March & Protest" through downtown Houston on Labor Day, one of many such public demonstrations nationwide, according to event organizers.

Scheduled speakers include Councilwoman Carol Alvarado, Minister Robert Muhammad and labor leader Maria Maldonado.

Organizers said participants will meet at Market Square on Main Street around 10 a.m. Monday and then march to City Hall, where a rally will be
held.

Organizers say they will be calling for legislation that will grant permanent residency for unauthorized residents in the United States.

They say the major reasons for the march are "the continued failure of the Congress to forge a more humane immigration bill and the growing discrimination, violence, and xenophobic actions against immigrants."

Other such demonstrations are planned in the upcoming weeks in Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
