Hundreds Of Undocumented Immigrants Gather In Houston For National Convention

The purpose is to train immigration leaders but also to draw attention to the situation of those in the country illegally.

About 1,000 mostly young, undocumented immigrants are gathering at the George R. Brown Convention Center this weekend.
    Sheridan Aguirre is undocumented.

He works with United We Dream, an advocacy group for young immigrants. He’s here with about a thousand mostly young, undocumented immigrants from across the country, who are stepping out of the shadows to draw attention to their situation.

“The United We Dream Congress is a space where undocumented youths are able to gather to gain leadership skills and be able to plan out the priorities for the undocumented immigrant community,” Aguirre says.

The majority of them are DREAMers, those who were brought to this country illegally as children and qualify for President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

Berenice Hernandez is one of them. She’s currently working on a master’s in social work at the University of Houston.

Her hope is to learn more about the needs of the undocumented community and the resources available to them.

“The immigration system isn’t something that’s just very straight-forward. It’s not as practicable as people think it is,” she says.

“So there’s always changing things, different situations or policies that are enacted.”

Not all of the congress attendees have the same story.

Justin Nguyen, who lives in Boston, does not qualify for DACA. He came to the U.S. from Vietnam four years ago, at age 14, and then overstayed his visa.

He says at this time he can’t see a pathway to legal status.

“The process (is) very long and very uncertain that I will even get a pathway to citizenship,” he says. “And it requires a lot of money and I’m from a low-income family, so we don’t have that kind of funding.”

Nguyen hopes he will never have to move back because he’s built a life here and he doesn’t feel safe in Vietnam.

Congress participants can attend workshops and listen to keynote speaker Jorge Ramos, probably the best known Spanish language newscaster in the U.S.

The highlight of the three-day convention is a rally to Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman’s office on Saturday. They’ll protest the county’s agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as part of the 287(g) program, which gives deputies the authority to enforce immigration laws.

“The Houston community has been working to end that contract so we’re bringing in everyone on board to say, this has to go, precisely because it fits into our overall priorities as a network,” Aguirre says.

The United We Dream Congress is taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center Friday through Sunday.

This is the first time it’s happening in Houston.

The first congress took place in 2011.

Are you kidding me? Where is ICE? They should be rounding them up and deporting them at "conventions" and "congresses like this.

Dreamers from around the country converge in Houston for the United We Dream Congress 2016

For young immigrants living in America, life is all about dreaming.

"We dream for the opportunity to live a life with dignity, being able to go to work and to go to school without the fear of being detained; without the fear of coming home to find that our family has been deported".

That is how Adonias Arévalo describes the central aspirations of young, undocumented people like him. He and other members of United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the nation, are gathering in Houston, Friday through Sunday, for the United We Dream Congress 2016. More than 1,000 Dreamers from 23 states are expected to network, march and participate in workshops over the weekend.

Arévalo came to America from El Salvador with his family more than a decade ago, when he was 13. His family cannot return.

"I lost one of my family members, and we are afraid that going back to the country would be a death sentence for me and my family," Arévalo said. "El Salvador is the most violent country in the world".

Arévalo and about 1.4 million other young people who came to America without authorization when they were minors are eligible for work permits and relief from deportation under one of President Obama´s executive orders, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

Almost 700,000 have obtained the benefit so far, according to the Pew Research Center.

Estimates from the Migration Policy Institute show that close to 280,000 of young adults are eligible for DACA in Texas, including 68,000 in Harris County.

The United We Dream Congress 2016 is being held in Houston for specific reasons, says Cristina Jiménez, director of the national coalition.

Harris County detains and deports more people than almost any other county, Jiménez says. In a hearing before the U.S. Senate, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that the top three counties for deportations in 2015 were Los Angeles County in California, Maricopa County in Arizona, and Harris County.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is one of the few law enforcement agencies in the country that cooperates with ICE in a controversial program known as 287(g), which expires at the end of June and is currently being evaluated for renewal. Under the program, HSCO transfers undocumented people entering the county jail into the custody of ICE authorities.

Citlalli Álvarez, a Dreamer who was brought to Houston from Monterrey, Mexico, when she was four years old, says her cause is not about numbers but about lives. One of the activities she is most excited about this weekend is a rally and march planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, when the Dreamers will march from Discovery Green to the Sheriff's Office.

"We are going to be chanting, we are going to have theatrical plays, and we are going to have a piñata representing the 287(g) contract. We are going to break that piñata very hard!" says Álvarez, who graduated with an anthropology degree from Georgetown University last year.

The other reason the United We Dream Congress is being held in Houston is that Texas and several other states challenged DACA and the implementation of DAPA (Deferred Action for Parental Accountability), another executive order that would provide temporary relieve from deportation to undocumented parents of U.S. citizens. United States v. Texas is currently being reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court, and a verdict is expected by the end of the month.

Texas has become a battleground for Dreamers, and DACA represents a milestone victory that is under attack. Several activities over the weekend involve training and workshops related to the impending Supreme Court decision.

For Jorge Ramos, the Noticias Univision (Univision News) anchor who will be the keynote speaker at the Congress, Dreamers are the people who have impressed him the most in his three decades as a journalist.

"They have changed history," Ramos said. "They convinced President Obama to approve DACA and their push for immigration changes is now going all the way to the top in the Supreme Court".

    And something else.

"Their parents learned to be invisible to survive," Ramos explained. "The Dreamers have done exactly the opposite. They came to light, openly showing their undocumented condition. They are present, they are strong, they are fearless, and that is powerful."

Immigrant Youth Protest in Downtown Houston

    POSTED 5:26 PM, JUNE 11, 2016
    BY MICHADHOLLIDAYBLOG

HOUSTON- Approximately a thousand immigrant youth and allies gathered in downtown Houston today to protest 287G.

287-G is a partnership between Immigration Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement that delegates authority for immigration enforcement within their particular jurisdictions.

In a nutshell, the bill allows for the rapid deportations of undocumented immigrants living in Harris County.

Sheridan Aguirre, the Communications Coordinator for United We Dream, sees the partnership as unfair.

"We have people who will be stopped for very minor citations." says Aguirre.

"And because of this program, it essentially creates a pathway for them to go through a deportation process rapidly. Here in Houston is actually the deportation capital of the nation."

Alexis Molina, who attended the protest with his little brother, knows first hand about the potential negative effects of287(g) can have on immigrant families.

"My father is now in detention, due to the fact he got stopped." says Molina.

"As a result of this contract 287(g), they detained him, and they have him in the detention center while he has his mentally handicapped son, which I'm currently looking after because I have hope that he'll get out."

I hope they start getting the message that there is nothing special about them, there is nothing unique about them, there is nothing they're doing here that we need or want, and the more they insult our country, the more united our country is against them. We don't care about their sob stories, most of which are lies and fairy tales fabricated to try to invoke sympathy from stupid people, Americans have our own sob stories, so we don't care about theirs, we care about our own.

They need to lock arms, pack their bags and get the hell out of here .... now.

They are training these young socialist minions to be their movers and shakers of the future. Since the powers behind this invasion hate anglo and Christian European descendant Americans, they are importing as many people from around the globe as possible with views that are alien to American principles.

These young acolytes are perfect for the sinister deeds of their masters like Soros.
