I.C.E. continues to pursue deportation of President Obama’s uncle

Federal immigration officials continue to pursue deportation of President Obama’s uncle

FRAMINGHAM -- Federal immigration officials are still pursuing the deportation of President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, to Kenya, officials said today.

The statement from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement came a week after Onyango Obama resolved drunken driving charges and a day after the state Registry of Motor Vehicles issued him a hardship driver’s license so he could get to his job as manager at two Metrowest liquor stores.

“Now that Mr. Onyango’s criminal case has completed, ICE has communicated, in accordance with standard procedure, with his attorney regarding his removal pursuant to a previous final order by an immigration judge.” Brian P. Hale, ICE director of public affairs.

Obama, who is the half-brother of the president’s late father, must appear at a meeting next week at ICE offices in Burlington to discuss his deportation, according to a person with direct knowledge of his case.

It is unclear whether he will ultimately be deported. Obama’s immigration lawyer has said in the past that he intends to fight it.

Obama was last ordered deported in 1992. But he never left. He arrived today at his house in Framingham carrying grocery bags and wearing a baseball cap. He rushed inside without comment.

Obama appeared last Tuesday in Framingham District Court and admitted that his blood alcohol level was 0.14 when he was arrested by Framingham Police Officer Val Krishtal on Aug. 24. A judge continued the case without a finding for one year, meaning it will be dismissed if Obama’s record stays clean.

In a statement today, Registry of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Sara Lavoie said Obama appeared before RMV officials Monday and asked to be given a hardship license. His employer at Conti Liquors supported the request and filed a letter, stating that Obama manages Conti Liquors in Framingham and Five Star Liquors in Grafton.

“Mr. Obama was granted a hardship license following a hearing yesterday (Monday) at the Registry’s Wilmington branch. In general, hearing officers weigh a driver’s record, specific offense, and the hardship asserted by that driver,’’ Lavoie wrote.

She added that “in this instance, the driver also provided the necessary documentation to receive a hardship license — proof of enrollment in an alcohol treatment program and a letter from his employer.’’

Lavoie said Obama is now allowed to drive from noon until midnight to “accommodate the work schedule set by his employer.’’

Obama’s drunken driving arrest in August attracted international attention because it revealed that he had been living in the United States illegally since the 1992 deportation order. He was the second presidential relative found to be living in the United States illegally.

Obama’s criminal defense lawyer said last month that he believed Obama would be back before the federal immigration court in May
