ICE agent assaulted, injured during arrest in Chandler

By Jonathan Reid The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team Fri Mar 29, 2013 12:00 PM

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was injured Thursday morning in Chandler after police said he was assaulted by a Mexican national he was attempting to take into custody on a federal warrant, according to a court document.

Ramon Carreno-Ochoa, 43, was arrested at about 6:45 a.m. on suspicion of aggravated assault on a police officer, assault, resisting arrest with injury, possession of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Chandler police.

Police said Carreno-Ochoa fled to an alley, at 25 W. Oakland, after the agent attempted to contact him on a federal warrant.

While attempting to detain Carreno-Ochoa in the alley, police said the agent used pepper spray after Ochoa attempted to punch him, according to the court document.

Police said the pepper spray did not deter Carreno-Ochoa, who then attempted to take out a large folding knife from his back pocket while wrestling with the agent.

Police said a Chandler resident helped detain Carreno-Ochoa after seeing the two struggling on the ground.

The agent was treated at a hospital for an undetermined injury to his foot, according to the document. Police said the resident refused medical treatment.

While searching Carreno-Ochoa, police said they found a crystal substance, later confirmed by police to be methamphetamine, and a pipe.

Carreno-Ochoa was booked into a Maricopa County Jail after being treated for minor injuries he suffered during the fight, according to the document.

Police said Carreno-Ochoa is in the U.S. illegally and has been convicted on disorderly conduct and a probation violation charges.

    Probation in lieu of deportation?
