ICE arrests surge 65% in N.Y. after Trump took office, while busts of people without convictions up 225%

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement drastically stepped up arrests in New York City in the eight months after President Trump was sworn in, according to a City Hall analysis.

Arrests by ICE in what the federal agency considers the New York City area — which includes several counties north of the city — increased by more than 65% in 2017, compared with the same period in 2016, according to the Mayor's Office of Immigration Affairs.

Arrests by ICE of people with no criminal convictions increased by 225% in the New York City area in the eight months following the inauguration, the city said.

New York City has a policy of not cooperating with ICE detainers, except in cases of specific serious crimes.

The spike in New York comes as immigration enforcement efforts also spiked nationally. Removals of undocumented people by ICE also increased — by 109% overall in the New York City area, and by more than 155% for those immigrants without prior criminal convictions. The statistics are in comparison for the same eight-month period in 2016.

The number of people being detained during removal proceedings also increased, particularly for unaccompanied minors who arrive in the U.S. without their parents — detention jumped by 554% from 2016 to 2017, according to the mayor's office.

That comes as the city faces a backlog of 90,000 immigration cases, the city said.

The New York City area referenced in the fact sheet includes the five boroughs as well as Dutchess, Nassau, Putnam, Suffolk, Sullivan, Orange, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties.

The city released the report the same day President Trump visited Long Island and offered tough talk about immigration laws in an effort to stem the violence of the MS-13 gang.
