Federal officials have rounded up 20 to 24 illegal immigrants discovered early Thursday morning at a southwest Houston home near Hillcroft and Edgemoor.
Click2Houston reports that the event unfolded when Houston police officers tried to pull over a reported stolen vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. When the driver eventually pulled over, people began jumping out of the vehicle and some ran to the house.
News92FM reports that a police officer was chasing some suspicious people when he discovered a U-Haul moving van stuffed with about 20 people.
The radio station reports that at least one was from Honduras, but most were thought to be from Mexico. Police officers "took them inside a suspected stash house to warm up," the station reports.
Authorities tell the Houston Chronicle that residents in the house knew nothing about the immigrants. The van just happened to stop on the street in front of their home and two people ran into their back yard.
Police questioned the owners of the home but did not arrest or detain them. Officers put the immigrants inside the house to keep them warm during the chilly morning.
KHOU-TV reports that at least 24 illegal immigrants were apprehended, with some in the moving van. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents took the group into custody.
