    March 28, 2016 — ICE arrests more than 1,100 in operation targeting gangs

    A five-week operation, dubbed Project Shadowfire, netted 1,133 arrests, including more than 900 transnational criminal gang members and others associated with transnational criminal activity, like drug trafficking, human smuggling and sex trafficking, murder and racketeering. The operation was led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and concluded March 21. Full Story

    March 29, 2016 — US government, Hong Kong authorities to share more than $20 million seized in massive HSI apparel smuggling probe


    The governments of the U.S. and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will share $20.5 million in forfeited assets seized as part of a probe spearheaded ICE’s HSI into what is believed to be the largest commercial fraud scheme ever uncovered on the West Coast. Full Story

    Chicago doctor indicted for falsifying federal certificates so applicants for US citizenship could bypass citizenship tests
    Dr. Kostic, 59, and Pozdol, 47, both from Chicago, are each charged with one count of knowingly making false statements in a document submitted to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Dr. Kostic is also charged with one count of attempted unlawful procurement of citizenship or naturalization. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

    Honolulu man convicted of drug trafficking receives life sentence
    Gilbert Lee Medina, 52, was sentenced by Senior District Judge Helen Gillmor. Medina was convicted by a jury last year of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Medina’s two prior drug felony convictions in California made imposition of the life sentence mandatory. There is no parole under current federal criminal law.

    Rhode Island man sentenced for trafficking in counterfeit Viagra
    Ricky Lugo, 49, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton to a year and a day in prison and ordered to pay restitution of $104,239. In Oct 2015, he was charged with four counts of trafficking in counterfeit versions of erectile dysfunction medications, including Pfizer Inc.’s Viagra, Eli Lilly’s Cialis, and Bayer’s Levitra.

    Convicted sex offender sentenced for downloading child pornography
    Joshua Dunston, 38, of Bangor, a registered sex offender, was sentenced to 121 months in prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release for possession of child pornography. He also received a consecutive sentenced of 24 additional months for violating the terms and conditions of his supervised release, stemming for his 2006 child pornography conviction.

    ICE seeks public's help in locating badge counterfeiter believed to be in Germany
    34-year-old Roberto Craciunica, a Romanian man believed to be residing in Germany, was indicted in October 2015 in the Eastern District of Virginia for a variety of charges related to manufacturing and distributing counterfeit badges, including trafficking in counterfeit goods; smuggling; and possession, sale or transportation of false seals. Interpol has also issued a Red Notice for Craciunica’s arrest.

    South Texas man pleads guilty to federal charges of receiving sexually explicit child pornography involving children under 12
    Eduardo Pena, 33, from Palmview, Texas, entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez. Judge Alvarez accepted Pena's guilty plea and set his sentencing for June 16. At that time, Pena faces a minimum of five and up to 20 years in federal prison, and a possible $250,000 fine.

    US government, Hong Kong authorities to share more than $20 million seized in massive HSI apparel smuggling probe
    The ensuing probe by HSI special agents in Los Angeles and Hong Kong, working closely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and HKSAR’s Customs and Excise Department, revealed the smuggling scheme resulted in more than 7,000 shipping containers of apparel, worth over $600 million, being illegally imported into the United States.

    APR 01 (SAN FRANCISCO)


    Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, has been linked to multiple overdoses and deaths throughout the Sacramento region since last week. The overdoses are occurring at an alarming rate and are the basis for this public safety alert. Fentanyl is an odorless substance considered to be 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin and 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl is potentially lethal, even at very low levels.
