    El Paso man sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for receiving child pornography
    Victor Jerome Reza, 54, was also ordered to be placed on supervised release for 10 years after he completes his prison term, register as a sex offender, and pay a $1,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Philip R. Martinez also ordered Reza surrender to federal authorities before July 20 to begin serving his prison term.

    David Alberto Canales, 47, pleaded guilty to these charges in August 2014 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Upon completion of his prison term, Canales will be removed from the United States.

    ICE joint operation results in 37 MS-13 gang arrests for murder, racketeering
    Twenty-two of the 37 MS-13 members indicted Wednesday also face other felony charges to include murder, attempted murder, assault and firearms violations. HSI and its law enforcement partners arrested 16 of the indicted gang members early Wednesday morning during a coordinated operation. Five indicted suspects remain at large; another 16 suspects were already in custody on various state charges.

    The detective determined that Jeremiah Chayse Gardiner, of Mesquite, Texas, uploaded images of child pornography to a social networking application called Tumblr. On April 17, 2014, Mesquite detectives visited West Mesquite High School to speak with Gardiner and execute a search warrant on his cellphone.

    Additional sex trafficking charges filed against Pennsylvania man
    Corderro Cody, 27, of Allentown, has been charged on four additional counts — three additional counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, or attempt; and one count of sex trafficking of a minor. The superseding indictment was filed in federal court May 14. Cody now faces a total of nine federal charges related to sex trafficking.

    Evandro Sergio Pais Franca, of Brazil, was convicted in absentia Nov. 5, 2012, after being found guilty of hiring a hitman to kill Maria Aprecida Vieira, the mayor of Nacip Raydan, Brazil. According to court documents, Franca ordered the assassination of Vieira April 5, 2000.

    Bakersfield-area man sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for methamphetamine trafficking
    Santos Acevedo Gutierrez, 41, of Shafter, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neil. In addition to the prison term, Judge O’Neil also ordered Acevedo Gutierrez to forfeit $10,123, funds linked to his drug trafficking activities.

    DEA Releases 2015 National Heroin Threat Assessment

    MAY 22 (WASHINGTON)

    The National Heroin Threat Assessment (NHTA), released today by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), shows heroin use and availability on the rise and causing more overdose deaths than at any time in the last decade. Although fewer people presently use heroin than other illicit drugs, the heroin user population is growing at a faster rate than any other drug of abuse, almost doubling between 2007 and 2013?from 161,000 to 289,000?according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). According to the Centers for Disease Control, deaths involving heroin more than tripled between 2007 (2,402) and 2013 (8,260).
