May 18, 2015 – ICE Boston arrests fugitive who hired hitman to kill Brazilian mayor

A 57-year-old man convicted in Brazil for hiring a hitman to kill the mayor of Nacip Raydan, Brazil, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers May 11 in Boston. Full Story

May 20, 2015 – ICE removes man wanted by Romanian authorities for attempted murder

A 36-year-old Romanian man wanted in his home country on attempted murder charges was removed from the United States May 18 by officers with ERO. Full Story

May 22, 2015 – ICE Chicago office deports Mexican man wanted for revenge murder in Mexico

A Mexican national wanted for murder in Mexico was deported May 21 and turned over to Mexican law enforcement authorities to face criminal charges. Full Story

Carlos Cortez-Hernandez, aka Jesus Agaton-Martinez, 34, was removed to Mexico May 21 and turned over to the custody of the Mexican Attorney General’s Office.

US citizen sentenced in Mexico to 199 years for producing child pornography
Gary Michael Feroglia, 56, a previously convicted sexual predator in the United States, was also convicted in Mexico for possessing a firearm created solely for use by Mexican armed forces.

Pedro Dombele, who had been living in the U.S. lawfully, was criminally arrested in Westborough, Mass. in April 2006 for assault and battery and later convicted.

HSI San Diego Special Agent William Thompson was awarded The Attorney General’s Special Commendation which recognizes an ICAC task force or affiliate agency for significant investigative contributions. HSI Norfolk Special Agent Paul Wolpert received the Mission Children’s Child Protection Award which honors a law enforcement officer who made a significant investigative contribution to protect children from abuse or victimization.

On May 13, seven employees from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) Detroit field office were among 500 people from 23 different organizations recognized at the Detroit’s Federal Executive Board’s 38th annual Federal Employee Recognition Ceremony.

El Paso man sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for receiving child pornography
Victor Jerome Reza, 54, was also ordered to be placed on supervised release for 10 years after he completes his prison term, register as a sex offender, and pay a $1,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Philip R. Martinez also ordered Reza surrender to federal authorities before July 20 to begin serving his prison term.

Jose de Jesus Deniz-Sahagun, 31, was transferred to ICE custody May 18 following his arrest three days earlier by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the port of entry in Douglas.

El Salvadoran man sentenced to 12 years for child pornography, sexual abuse charges
David Alberto Canales, 47, pleaded guilty to these charges in August 2014 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Upon completion of his prison term, Canales will be removed from the United States.

ICE joint operation results in 37 MS-13 gang arrests for murder, racketeering
Twenty-two of the 37 MS-13 members indicted Wednesday also face other felony charges to include murder, attempted murder, assault and firearms violations. HSI and its law enforcement partners arrested 16 of the indicted gang members early Wednesday morning during a coordinated operation. Five indicted suspects remain at large; another 16 suspects were already in custody on various state charges.

ICE removes man wanted by Romanian authorities for attempted murder
ERO Washington’s removal team escorted Alin Tomescu on flights from Washington Dulles International Airport in Fairfax to Bucharest Otopeni International Airport in Otopeni, Romania. On Tuesday, upon his arrival in Romania, ERO officers turned him over to the custody of Romanian law enforcement authorities.

Dallas-area man sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for producing child pornography with 2-year-old girl
The detective determined that Jeremiah Chayse Gardiner, of Mesquite, Texas, uploaded images of child pornography to a social networking application called Tumblr. On April 17, 2014, Mesquite detectives visited West Mesquite High School to speak with Gardiner and execute a search warrant on his cellphone.

Anthony R. Pecoraro, 52, of Colts Neck, New Jersey, previously pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion.

Additional sex trafficking charges filed against Pennsylvania man
Corderro Cody, 27, of Allentown, has been charged on four additional counts — three additional counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, or attempt; and one count of sex trafficking of a minor. The superseding indictment was filed in federal court May 14. Cody now faces a total of nine federal charges related to sex trafficking.

Former NM business comptroller pleads guilty to fraud, identity-theft charges
Stephanie Pyle, 40, was charged Feb. 10 in a 12-count indictment alleging that between January 2010 and May 2014, she used credit cards and account numbers without authorization in the name of a construction company to defraud the company.

Ken Zhiyi Liang, 38, of Irvine, was arrested Friday afternoon by special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) after accepting $6,000 from the witness in exchange for helping her abscond to China.

ICE Boston arrests fugitive who hired hitman to kill Brazilian mayor
Evandro Sergio Pais Franca, of Brazil, was convicted in absentia Nov. 5, 2012, after being found guilty of hiring a hitman to kill Maria Aprecida Vieira, the mayor of Nacip Raydan, Brazil. According to court documents, Franca ordered the assassination of Vieira April 5, 2000.

Bakersfield-area man sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for methamphetamine trafficking
Santos Acevedo Gutierrez, 41, of Shafter, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neil. In addition to the prison term, Judge O’Neil also ordered Acevedo Gutierrez to forfeit $10,123, funds linked to his drug trafficking activities.

DEA Releases 2015 National Heroin Threat Assessment
MAY 22 (WASHINGTON)

The National Heroin Threat Assessment (NHTA), released today by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), shows heroin use and availability on the rise and causing more overdose deaths than at any time in the last decade. Although fewer people presently use heroin than other illicit drugs, the heroin user population is growing at a faster rate than any other drug of abuse, almost doubling between 2007 and 2013?from 161,000 to 289,000?according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). According to the Centers for Disease Control, deaths involving heroin more than tripled between 2007 (2,402) and 2013 (8,260).
