Immigrant mother abandons children in San Diego: Restaurant owner supporting youngest siblings

SAN DIEGO - A local restaurant owner who received death threats for helping an immigrant family told 10News the children's mother abandoned them and fled the country.

Mark Lane, the owner of Poppa's Fresh Fish Company, says he has been supporting two of the woman's children.

"She just left and she never came back," Lane said.

He says two weeks ago, the mother of the Guatemalan family seeking asylum abandoned her two youngest sons with Lane and his wife, and sent the older brother and sister to Minnesota before taking off to meet her husband in Tijuana.

He says the boys, aged 15 and 16, are devastated. One of them even contemplated taking his own life.

"I'm trying not to be angry, but it's hard when you see four kids be abandoned and especially in a foreign country with strangers," said Lane.

He took the family in back in July and made national news after receiving death threats for helping the undocumented immigrants.

The family says they would have been killed by gangs if they did not leave.

Last month, the children's mother told 10News she was thankful Lane gave them a place to stay and food to eat.

He says he does not understand why the mother would abandon her children.

Lane fears they will be deported to Guatemala and is now considering adopting the youngest boys.

"My wife and I both decided if it's possible, we will do it and kind of help them along," Lane said. "They're great kids."
