Illegal aliens being bused as far north as Colorado from Texas shelters

Planes, Buses Move Migrants From Crowded Border Shelters

U.S. authorities in Texas are using aircraft to move migrants to less-crowded areas for processing, while others have been bused as far north as Colorado to alleviate the strain on overwhelmed shelters along the border.

BY CEDAR ATTANASIO AND MORGAN LEE, Associated Press

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — U.S. authorities are using aircraft to move migrants to less-crowded areas for processing, while others have been bused as far north as Colorado to alleviate the strain on overwhelmed shelters along the border in Texas and New Mexico.

Several dozen migrants were bused to Denver overnight with the help of the New Mexico governor's office to help crowded shelters in El Paso and neighboring Las Cruces, New Mexico, where one shelter reported running low on food.

It's likely the bus trips will continue. In addition, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has scheduled daily flights out of Texas' Rio Grande Valley at least through Tuesday for some migrants.

The flights aim to ensure adults don't slip through the cracks as agents scramble to process the increasing number of families crossing the border.

This is ludicrous! One minute we're hearing the asylum claimants will be forced to stay in Mexico to await the results of their claims ..... next thing you know we're hearing about planes dropping them off in all parts of our interior. I'm convinced these folks will never be deported. Furthermore, 70 to 90 percent of them are no better than illegal aliens because their claims are not credible. What really makes it bad is that these people are getting government EBT cards and work authorization permits. They take American jobs and have "meat" three times a day at our expense!

55 Central American refugees seeking asylum bused to Denver on Sunday night

Overwhelmed shelters in Texas and New Mexico sent refugees to 3 churches

Fifty-five Central American refugees seeking permanent asylum in the United States arrived in Denver early Monday morning and have been taken to three churches for temporary housing, according to people who work with migrants.

The refugees were bused overnight from a shelter in Las Cruces, New Mexico that is operated by Annunciation House, a nonprofit that works with migrants along the El Paso, Texas/Juarez, Mexico border, said Megan Hope, a Denver resident who is an Annunciation House board member. It is the first time the agency has taken refugees outside of Texas and New Mexico, she said.

The refugees have been taken to three Denver churches, including First Unitarian Society on North Lafayette Street. First Unitarian is the church hosting Jeanette Vizguerra, a Colorado immigration activist who is taking sanctuary in there while she fights deportation.

First Unitarian is hosting 20 asylum seekers; First Plymouth Congregational is hosting 10; and Denver Community Church is hosting 25, according to organizers.

“They are asylum seekers fleeing violence in Central America and Mexico,” Hope said. “The numbers recently have been increasing so rapidly that shelters in Texas and New Mexico are overwhelmed.”

In a Facebook post at 4:16 a.m. Monday, Vizguerra said about 20 people had arrived in the church, mostly families. They primarily are from Guatemala and one family is from Honduras, she said.

The group has a lot of dads with children. She pleaded to her followers to bring clothes, toiletries and food to the church. The families are expected to be there at least until Wednesday.

The churches will provide shelter and food on a temporary basis while the refugees find permanent housing with relatives or associates across the U.S., Hope said.

“I don’t know what their ultimate destination is,” Hope said.

Jennifer Piper, interfaith organizing director for American Friends Service Committee in Denver, said numerous volunteers from Annunciation House in Las Cruces, N.M., contacted her and several Denver homeless outreach groups on Saturday asking for emergency help because they had been overwhelmed with asylum seekers from Central America.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents have been releasing the refugees on the streets of El Paso and Las Cruces including 1,300 in one day, Piper said. The federal government is not providing food and shelter or helping them connect with sponsors in the U.S., she said. Instead, volunteer agencies have been forced to pick up the slack, Piper said.

“We had to respond on short notice,” she said.

The problem isn’t the number of people seeking asylum, Piper said, rather the lack of support to help migrants connect with their sponsors at the border. Wait times could be weeks or they could be released with no way to contact their sponsors.

Piper agreed to help on Sunday morning on the condition that the three churches provide places for the asylum seekers and appoint a logistics coordinator,. At the time, no one knew when the bus would arrive in Denver.

People from different faiths are working to “take a moral stand” and welcome migrants, Pastor Michael Hidalgo of Denver Community Church said in a news release.

“We invite all who are a part of our communities to join with us by responding with mercy, compassion and kindness to the those seeking refuge,” he said. “We also call on our elected officials to join us to transcend partisan differences and debate, and to extend welcome and refuge to those seeking asylum.”

The three Denver churches that have agreed to house and feed the refugees are taking on huge responsibilities with little notice, Hope said. The refugees arrived at 2 a.m. Monday, Piper said.

After the first 55 asylum refugees are helped, Piper and officials from several churches will review how the project went and decide whether this is something they would like to do on a permanent basis, Piper said.

“I’m very grateful to faith communities for being able to extend this hospitality. I think they are doing as we are supposed to do as human beings. It’s a lot to take on. It all came very suddenly,” Hope said.

The refugees are mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras where street gangs and drug cartels are charging them rent and living quotas at the threat of violence or death, Hope said.

“These threats are very real. People are killed. Kids are forced into gangs,” she said.

Vizguerra and other activists have organized a rally at 5 p.m. Monday that will begin at the state capitol and end at First Unitarian, calling for Gov. Jared Polis’ support of immigrants, including in Vizguerra’s own immigration case.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock’s office issued a news release Monday afternoon, saying it affirmed support of the asylum seekers.

“Denver will always be a welcoming place for people seeking refuge,” Hancock said in a statement. “I am proud of our community for proactively stepping in to provide support in uniting these individuals with their family and friends. They deserve our compassion, not condemnation.”

    Some are returned to Mexico.

    Some are bused to Denver.

Some are flown from McAllen to Del Rio TX.

Some are bused to New Mexico or Arizona.

Single people are held in different places than families

    Unaccompanied children are held separately.

Convicted criminals are sent to jails or prisons.

Some of them give up and self deport.

I don't know how they ever know where anyone is.

You're right, it's a major mess. None of these folks should be allowed to leave the border area until their case has been adjudicated. Disseminating them throughout our interior just makes it tougher, if not impossible, to locate them when they fail to show up for their court date and are ordered deported as a no-show. Of course it has already been well established that most of them never had any intention of showing up because their asylum claim is for economic reasons which is not a qualifying criteria for asylum!
