FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - About two dozen immigrants and advocates from across the country met Wednesday morning near U.S. Rep. Chris Smith's office in Freehold Township to call for a path to legal permanent residency for those who are months away from losing temporary protections to stay in the United States.
"We're living in this country, contributing to the economy," said Luis Munoz, a native of El Salvador with Temporary Protected Status who has lived in Red Bank for two decades. "Possibly, everything we earn in this country stays here."
Munoz and other local supporters joined a group of activists who are traveling nationwide calling to save the Temporary Protected Status program, which offers renewable non-immigrant visa and work permit for immigrants from certain countries affected by civil wars, natural disasters and other crises.

NJ IMMIGRANT MOM: Trump could dismantle TPS, leave her family in limbo
HAITIAN IMPACT: Trump TPS decision will disrupt NJ Haitian families, advocates say
The TPS Justice for Journey Caravan arrived in a large blue-and-orange bus, and demonstrators walked out cheering and waving wooden noisemakers in the otherwise quiet, nondescript shopping plaza.
Political activists regularly stage protests at the shopping plaza to question Smith's record on gun legislation, women's rights and other issues, with little to no public response from Smith, a Republican. Others have criticized him for not hosting a town hall in more than two decades.
This time, aides joined the two dozen activists and read a letter from Smith stating he backed the American Promise Act, a bill sponsored by Nydia Velazquez, a New York Democrat, that would offer immigrants with temporary protections relief from deportation.
"They came here legally and are now contributing members of their communities," said Jo Smith Schloeder, reading the lawmaker's letter. "To terminate their protected status would result in the break-up of families and their return to countries with conditions that may still be unsafe."

As Schloder read the letter, a motorist in the parking lot yelled, "Come legally!" before driving away.
LAWSUIT: NJ backs lawsuit challenging Trump administration's end of TPS
More than 430,000 people from 10 countries have TPS, which was created under the Immigration Act of 1990.
There are more than 19,700 TPS holders in New Jersey, according to 2017 figures from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The Trump administration announced plans to terminate these temporary protections for six countries, arguing that conditions in those countries had improved to the point where the TPS holders can return.
"It's not fair that we've been here working for 20 years legally," said Elva Perlera of Orange, one of 262,500 Salvadoran TPS holders in the United States. "We need the support for residency to be able to stay here with our children. Our children need us."
TPS holders from Sudan will lose their protections as soon as next month. Recipients from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti and Nepal will lose their protections by 2020.
The Journey for Justice Caravan, which left Los Angeles in August, has traveled to at least 30 cities calling for the preservation of the TPS program. The group started the New Jersey leg of its tour Monday with a protest in Newark, which drew at least 50 demonstrators, before heading on Wednesday to U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer's office in Glen Rock and to Smith's office in Freehold.

Mardoel Hernandez, a Honduran TPS holder who lives in Rockville, Maryland, thanked Smith for backing the American Promise Act and called on Congress to move the bill forward and vote.
"We are asking to take action now before 275,000 kids are separated from their parents next year," said Hernandez, a member of the National TPS Alliance.
What's the Congress going to do when these kids are separated from their parents?"
Hernandez, a real estate investor, is one of 86,000 Honduran TPS holders. He said more than 31 percent of TPS holders own a home.

The caravan plans to travel to Morristown on Thursday before moving onto other states. They scheduled their final stop on Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C.
In Freehold, the demonstration drew advocates from the American Friend Service Committee and Centro Comunitario CEUS. Both organizations are based in North Jersey, but have members in Red Bank, Long Branch and Asbury Park.
Democrats have attacked Smith's record on immigration reform. Smith, a longtime House member who has touted his record as a champion for human rights, supports securing the U.S.-Mexican border and restricting the visa application process.
Smith's Democratic challenger, Josh Welle, said Wednesday that he blames Smith and other longtime lawmakers for the broken immigration system.
"I believe that this country is in desperate need for comprehensive immigration reform, and that has to include a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million-plus [undocumented] immigrants who are in this country," Welle said in a statement. "However, Congress is completely broken, and it's because career politicians like my opponent, Chris Smith, who has been there for 38 years, are not leading on these contemporary issues."
In the letter read by Schloeder, Smith noted that he is the only Republican co-sponsor of the American Promise Act.
He also mentioned his introduced 1999 legislation to expand the Nicaragua Adjustment and Central American Relief Act to offer permanent legal status to immigrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Haiti. The bill never passed.
