Migrants, children land on Hutchinson Island

At least 19 have been recovered, officials say

    UPDATED 1:01 PM EDT Jun 12, 2015

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla. —Nineteen illegal migrants, including several children and toddlers, were recovered after landing in the Waveland Beach area Friday morning.

    • PATRICIA BOAVENTURA DASILVA

Eighteen of the migrants were Haitian, including four children under the age of 4.

One of the children was only 6 months old. All were in good health.

One of the migrants, a Brazilian man, was led in handcuffs to the Border Patrol van, but a Marine Interdiction Agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection says there's no evidence at this time that identifies him as the human smuggler.

The Brazilian man's wife, 39-year-old Patricia DaSilva, is believed to be on the loose. Residents who see her on the beach or in the area are asked to call 911.

Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection searched and examined the boat, while Sheriff's deputies from Saint Lucie and Martin County teamed up to recover migrants who were found walking up and down A1A near the county line.

Beachfront condo residents said the boat's engines were so loud, they were woken up by them around 5:15 in the morning.

"There were a few people walking down the street that turned themselves in to police," lifeguard David Decker said. "They [told deputies] they were on the boat, and they didn't know what to do."
