RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A Rankin County deputy is in the hospital after an illegal immigrant, who was intoxicated, hit him.

That deputy was responding to call when a Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling northbound on MS 43 crossed into the southbound lane and struck the deputy’s car according to Corporal Eric Henry with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.



Nehemias Abraham Tema-Lopez is charged with DUI, lack of a driver’s license and insurance.

The deputy is currently at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The deputy will have surgery on his elbow; he also sustained a few bruises and scratches according to Sheriff Bryan Bailey with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department.

Lopez is currently being held at the Rankin County Jail.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services department has been notified.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating this crash.
