DOWNTOWN — An illegal immigrant who stabbed a man waiting for a bus with his girlfriend in Downtown has plead guilty to one count of attempted second-degree murder and was sentenced to nine years in state prison, Santa Monica police said.

Upon his release from prison, authorities said Francisco Leon-Urbalexo, 40, of Sonora, Mexico will be released to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

Investigators used DNA evidence to link him to the stabbing, which took place Aug. 13, 2012. Police said the victim, a 19-year-old Los Angeles man, had just left a local restaurant on Santa Monica Boulevard in Downtown with his girlfriend around 6:20 p.m. when he was randomly attacked and stabbed multiple times.

The victim, identified by police as Jarred Hill, was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Leon-Urbalexo fled the scene on foot.

Leon-Urbalexo was tracked by Santa Monica detectives to Yuma, Ariz., where he was being held by federal authorities for illegal entry into the U.S., and brought back to California through the extradition process in June of 2013 to face criminal charges.
