An undocumented immigrant who accidentally ran over his 4-year-old son with a van in Ohio has been sentenced to six
months in jail, most of which he's already served.

Natividad de Jesus Hernandez pleaded guilty to forgery and a misdemeanor negligent homicide count in January, more
than two years after the December 2013 accident that killed his son, Angel Gustavo Hernandez.

A Union County judge on Monday sentenced the 32-year-old father to 180 days in jail. He had already served 167 days,
which means he will spend less than two weeks behind bars. He also faces five years of probation.

Investigators say Hernandez is from El Salvador and used a permanent resident card with someone
else's registration number. Questions about his immigration status remain unresolved.

His attorney says the heartbroken man, who has a fiancee and a six-month-old baby daughter who
need him, will seek a way to stay in the United States legally, reported The Columbus Dispatch.

According to a friend, Hernandez has been living in the US since he was 18 years old.

Little Angel was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt or child restraint when he fell out of his father's
1997 Chevrolet Venture minivan and was run over by the vehicle on the morning of December 26, 2013.

Prosecutors said the accident occurred as Hernandez was fleeing from a construction site in
Plain City after trying to steal scrap metal.

A witness to the incident said Hernandez stayed on the scene with the child until an ambulance
arrived, then jumped back in the van and drove away with two other young kids in tow.

His vehicle was later found at the Ohio Health Dublin Methodist Hospital, where the child had
been transported by paramedics.

During Angel's memorial service held in early January 2014, Hernandez said through a translator
that he has been destroyed by his son's death.

Local charities and religious organizations raised more than $8,800 through a GoFundMe campaign
to send Angel's body to his mother and father's native El Salvador for burial.
