Immigrant activist supports asylum for undocumented aliens

New Paltz - “They haven’t done what they should have done, which is to have an objective debate on the issue", activist and El Salvador immigrant Omar Henriquez told a gathering in New Paltz. "The United States as a nation of immigrants, should lead the way of how to deal with the situation of immigration on a global scale.”
Henriquez was responding to the proposed federal legislation on how to deal with the nearly 11 million undocumented citizens here in the United States today.

Henriquez, a United States citizen currently residing in Long Island, is currently serving on the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health fighting for the rights of workers who are undocumented in the workforce.

He has worked in this arena for 25 years, most recently as the SEIU’s Eastern Region Immigration Campaign coordinator. He also sits on the boards of directors of the Workplace Project, Resist, and CASA, the coordinating agency for the Spanish Americans of Nassau County.

Henriquez addressed members of the Caribbean and Latin Support Project, a New Paltz-based activist group, during a Sunday evening meeting, and told them it was time to step up and tell their government that the best way to deal with the situation is with diplomacy, not the military.

The current proposals in the House dealing with the immigrant issues are “bogus, out-of-date, and completely unacceptable,” he said.

“All of the proposals are not acceptable for certain immigrant groups. We believe it excludes certain people. One of the proposals is asking immigrants to self-deport. No one’s going to do that. We see the flaws already. We see the failure happening, so we can’t support something we know is going to fail.”

Henriquez suggested giving asylum to all undocumented citizens, given they are benefiting society by being in the United States. He claimed that most of them have jobs and a family to provide for, and that this country should recognize that.

Henriquez also bashed the idea of setting up a wall across the Mexico-United States border, and said that never has building a wall solved a problem before.

“Fences make good neighbors, but no fences make great neighbors,” he said.

Mr. Omar, the only immigrant groups which these proposals aren't acceptable for are the ILLEGAL immigrant groups. GET IT?

Well Senor Omar, you're wrong again. Why don't you ask Isreal how well their wall worked.

Where's your stats to back this BS up Mr. Omar?
We do recognize they are here to provide for their family, but YOU NEED TO RECOGNIZE THAT MANY OF THEM BROKE THE LAW TO GET HERE, AND BREAK LAWS BY STAYING HERE.

Most pro-illegal advocates like to use the word amnesty, but it appears Henriquez prefers the term asylum. Changing the word doesn't change the fact, Henriquez!
