A suspected immigrant smuggler is behind bars after leading authorities on a chase that ended with him barricading himself inside a home in Edinburg.

The incident happened inside a neighborhood off Gold Street and Ramseyer Drive in northern Edinburg around 1:45 p.m. Friday.

U.S. Border Patrol agents told Action 4 News that a man driving a BMW was spotted dropping off several people just south of the Falfurrias checkpoint.

Agents issued an alert for the car, which was last seen heading south.

Investigators said a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state trooper spotted the grey BMW and pulled it over for a traffic violation.

DPS officials said the driver did not have identification and bailed out of the car when the state trooper went to his patrol unit to run a records check.

The suspect reportedly ran into his common law wife's house on Gold Street where he allegedly barricaded himself inside.

Tactical teams that included state troopers, Border Patrol agents and U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were all at the scene.

DPS spokesman Sgt. Johnny Hernandez told Action 4 News that the suspect surrendered after 30 minutes time.

Authorities took the man in custody but his name and criminal charges against him were not immediately available.
