Immigration hawk leads business candidate in key Arizona contest
The Business Journal of Phoenix - 2:30 PM MST Thursdayby Mike SunnucksThe Business Journal

A new poll shows immigration hawk Randy Graf with a large lead over business-backed Steve Huffman in the Republican Congressional primary to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe.

The same survey shows moderate, former state Sen. Gabrielle Giffords leading ex-Tucson television news anchor Patty Weiss in the Democratic primary.

Democrats hope to pick up the open seat from Republicans this year and the contest could decide which political party controls Congress after the November elections. Party primaries for the race will occur next month.

Giffords leads Weiss by a 45 percent to 27 percent in the poll conducted for Tucson Weekly by the Arizona Opinion polling and research firm. Giffords has the support of Congressman Raul Grijalva, the Sierra Club and a number of labor unions, including the AFL-CIO.

The district in contention includes parts of Tucson as well as Sierra Vista and Tombstone and southeastern areas of the state along the Mexican border.

It is considered a competitive swing district and is getting national attention from both parties as well as business groups.

The poll gives Graf -- a former state lawmaker -- a large lead in the Republican primary against state Rep. Huffman and party activist Mike Hellon. Graf gets 36 percent in the polls versus 13 percent for Huffman and 10 percent for Hellon.

Graf favors get-tough, security-first immigration and border policies as well as the usual conservative mantra of lower taxes. He has the support of West Valley Congressman Trent Franks, anti-abortion advocates and the Minutemen group, which has patrolled the Arizona border. Graf ran against Kolbe in 2004.

Some Republicans worry, however, that if Graf wins the primary he will be the underdog against Giffords or Weiss in the politically moderate district.

Huffman is the business lobby's horse in the race to succeed Kolbe. He has the backing of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Realtors, Kolbe and Tucson auto dealer Jim Click. Huffman was a strong ally of business groups during his tenure in the state Legislature pushing hard for business tax cuts and a break for Intel Corp. to locate its new $3 billion computer chip plant in Chandler.
