Immigration leader says outsiders mucking up debate

WASHINGTON - arch on the National Mall said Answer, the organizers of the May 1 National Boycott are taking advantage of the immigrant movement for ideological purposes that have nothing to do with immigration.

Jamie Contreras, president of the National Capital Immigration Coalition that organized the march of an estimated 150,000 demonstrators April 10, said that ANSWER, or Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, has had no hand in the mobilization and is trying to “ride the wave of the community and that’s not fair.”

“They’re stepping in and spoiling the soup,” he said.

But the appeal for a boycott has sounded loudly in this movement that has no one leader. People are calling into Spanish-language television and radio shows to debate whether to skip work and avoid spending money on May 1 in an effort to call attention to the economic contributions of undocumented immigrants.

Immigration networks in some cities around the country will boycott and strike on their own.

Movement leaders from Los Angeles and Chicago came to Washington to clarify their message: Now is not the time to boycott.

But they still support immigrants. Instead, that night NCIC will hold gatherings in D.C., Maryland and Virginia to discuss worker rights, immigration and race.

ANSWER, which has been active in socialist causes and has been accused by conservatives of being a front for the World Workers Party, appears to be the leading national organization urging immigrants to skip work and school and avoid spending money that day.

“They’re thinking ideologically and not strategically,” Contreras said. He hasn’t met any leader mobilizing a boycott: “I don’t know who they are.”

But Contreras said ANSWER has had no hand in the burgeoning immigration movement and only showed up April 10 to pass out signs without contributing “one penny to our mobilization.”

ANSWER’s steering committee represents organizations that have campaigned against U.S. intervention around the world, and organizations that have campaigned for civil rights and for social and economic causes.

Members of the immigration coalition include Pastors for Peace; Haiti Support Network; Korea Truth Commission; Muslim Student Association; Mexico Solidarity Network; and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

    Inside the numbers

» There are 8 million legal immigrants eligible for citizenship.

» 50,000 to 600,000 are eligible in eight swing states like Florida, New Jersey, Oregon, Arizona, Washington, Colorado and Minnesota.

» ANSWER initiated the first international demonstration against the war in Iraq, drawing 200,000 people to D.C. and millions around the world.
