Immigration Raids Hurt New York Chinatown Business

World Journal, May 19, 2006

NEW YORK – Federal and city law enforcement, looking for undocumented immigrants, raided buses, Internet cafes, and restaurants in Chinatown and arrested seven people on May 16, reports the Chinese-language World Journal. As a result, local businessowners have reported a sharp drop in business. Ms. Liu, the owner of a long distance bus company in Chinatown, said that law enforcement asked one of her drivers about his residency status, which later caused people to fear riding the buses. Liu said that the number of out of state passengers has also decreased by half. Restaurants in the area also reported that banquet business is down, perhaps because patrons fear immigration raids. Immigration and Custom Enforcement officials have said the raids were prompted by credible tips.
