BROWNSVILLE, Texas

A well known illegal immigrant known as “The River Bandit” has been convicted for the crimes he committed last year.

A given testimony revealed that Julio Cesar Velasquez of Reynosa conducted schemes against other illegal immigrants by befriending and convincing them that he could further their entry into the United States. After the immigrants would cross the river, he would lead them to remote areas and rob them of their belongings. Defenseless women and children were his main target.

In a joint effort between the Border Patrol Tactical Unit and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were able to locate and arrest him in October 2015.

EDINBURG, Texas — An illegal alien convicted of crossing into Texas to rob illegal aliens and then cross back into Mexico will now spend five years in prison.

On Monday, Julio Cesar Velasquez, an illegal alien from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, appeared before Texas State Judge Rudy Delgado who handed down a five-year prison sentence for the charge of aggravated robbery.

Breitbart Texas reported in last year on the arrest of Velasquez by Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of a U.S. Border Patrol BORTAC team following an investigation and surveillance operation that led to his capture.

Information provided to Breitbart Texas at the time by the sheriff’s office revealed that since September 2015, numerous women and children reported being held at gun point by Velazquez who, after robbing them, would cross back into Mexico.

The victims, who are illegal aliens themselves, would report the robberies after turning themselves to authorities. Sheriff’s investigators confirmed to Breitbart Texas that they had been able to tie Velasquez to five separate robberies where the victims were women and children.

According to information provided to Breitbart Texas by the U.S. Border Patrol, Velasquez would befriend women and children by promising to help them get further into the country. Once he would get them to follow him, the man would pull out a handgun to rob them.

The area where Velasquez operated is known as Rincon Village. This is where mostly women and children cross. He appears to have chosen that area specifically because the aliens there were less likely to fight back.

As Breitbart Texas previously reported, Rincon Village is an area that has been used by Gulf cartel-tied human smugglers to bring across women and children who are generally from countries other than Mexico. These people are usually fingerprinted, photographed, and released with a court notice set for a later date. The Rincon Village area is one of the territories controlled by the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa.
