Jeff Flake: Senate to Vote on ‘Bipartisan’ DACA Bill in January

Unpopular Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said he believes Congress will put legalizing illegal immigrants who came to the country as children at the top of its agenda in 2018.

Flake made his prediction in a tweet Wednesday in which he claimed a bill will be “on the Senate floor in January.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the repeal of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September, but the move gave Congress a six-month window to come up with a bipartisan solution.

President Trump, despite his pro-America immigration stance, has supported Congress in its push to legalize the program.

Republicans and Democrats have been frantically working at doing just that, with it apparently taking precedent over border security measures that Republicans — who control the House and the Senate — claim to support.

    Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL)
said this week that a group of House Republicans and Democrats were crafting an amnesty to push for passage either this week or at the beginning of the new year. although House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has said repeatedly he does not expect an amnesty debate until January.

As Breitbart News’ John Binder has reported, a DACA amnesty deal has the potential to trigger a larger
chain migration over the next decade that could bring anywhere from 1 to 19 million new foreign nationals to the U.S., further crowding out American workers from the labor force and driving down U.S. wages.

Some 17.5 percent of DREAM Act illegal aliens (280,000), would be on food stamps by 2027 according to the Congressional Budget Office. Twenty thousand of those illegal aliens would be immediately eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits after the amnesty.

Flake, who has been a constant critic of President Trump, announced in October he would not be seeking re-election amid diving poll numbers and a range of popular conservative candidates eyeing his seat. He is also part of the group of senators working on legislation to “legalize” DACA.

    From Vox:
Sen. Flake’s vote was secured with a vague agreement on an immigration deal a few weeks ago. Flake used to be one of the key holdouts on tax reform, in large part due to his deficit concerns. But on December 1, the day the Senate passed its version of the tax bill, Flake assured Senate leadership he would vote yes if they made two concessions.

One was an agreement to phase out business expensing, a measure allowing businesses to write off the cost of new equipment, which Flake called an “$85 billion budget gimmick.” The other was an agreement from the White House and Senate leaders to negotiate on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (also known as DACA), an Obama-era program protecting about 800,000 young unauthorized immigrants from deportation.
In exchange for his vote, Flake was promised nothing more than a seat at the negotiating table on DACA — Republicans made no specific policy concessions and did not give a timeline for when an immigration deal agreement might happen.
“Giving protections for those kids — that’s what I hope comes out of it,” Flake told Vox at the time. “Obviously they can’t commit to do that, but they’ve committed to move forward with me and work with me on that.”
DREAMers are facing plenty of uncertainty in the coming weeks; the immigration bill’s fate is uncertain, and there are few clues as to what it could contain.
Earlier this month, Flake said he wanted to get a DACA deal done before the end of the year. At the same time, he knew it was unlikely the White House would agree to move so quickly.
Flake recently told Politico he believes he’s secured a commitment from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to hold a vote on an immigration by mid-January. But there’s plenty of uncertainty about what that deal might look like, as senators themselves are waiting to hear what the demands will be from the Trump White House.

Jeff Flake Says DACA Vote Including Path To Citizenship On Tap For January

By ALICE OLLSTEIN and Caitlin Macneal Published DECEMBER 20, 2017 1:37 PM

    Tierney Sneed contributed reporting.

Immigrant rights activist and several lawmakers voiced outrage this week as it became clear that Congress is not likely to act to restore the protections from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants before the end of the year—as Democratic leaders originally promised.

But Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) told reporters Wednesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has committed to holding a vote on a DACA fix early next year.

Flake, who agreed to vote for the tax bill this week based on a promise to be included in talks on DACA, said he is “pleased that the Majority Leader has committed to bring the bipartisan DACA bill we are currently negotiating to the Senate floor in January.”

Though he offered few details on the legislation he is negotiating with the White House, Flake claimed it would include a path to citizenship for DACA recipients along with border security measures. He added that the bill will address “chain migration” in the context of DACA recipients, but he did not detail other aspects of the negotiations.

“The White House is going to get back to us later in the week on a punch-list of items related to the border, but not really the border,” he told reporters.

McConnell confirmed his promise to TPM, saying in a statement: “If negotiators reach an agreement on these matters by the end of January, I will bring it to the Senate floor for a free-standing vote.”

“There are bipartisan discussions in the Senate, involving the Administration, about improving border security, interior enforcement and reforming important parts of our broken immigration system, including addressing the unlawfully established Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA),” he wrote. “I encourage those working on such legislation to develop a compromise that can be widely supported by both political parties and actually become law.”

Flake, who worked on the so-called Gang of Eight immigration bill that passed the Senate in 2013 and met its demise in the House, said that while he would love to push for comprehensive immigration reform next year, resolving the status of DACA before the program’s expiration date must be the top priority.

“We’re not going to do that by March 5 so we’ve got to be realistic about what we do,” he said. “The key is to keep this to DACA.”

Cory Gardner was interviewed on the news today, I don't remember which channel, and he explained why he was behind a DACA fix. His daughter has close friends who are DACA's from school.

Exactly. To me, he is putting personal issues with his family above the national interest of our country and citizens. Quite silly and childish in my view. Put him on the list for the .... BOOT!!
