    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    • The Rev. Jesse Jackson urges President Barack Obama to stop deportations that separate families.
    • Jacks condemns Congress for not passing comprehensive immigration reform.
    • Obama's administration has deported record numbers of people, drawing fire from some allies.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson joined local immigration advocates Thursday in urging President Barack Obama to stop deportations that separate families.

"We must not hide behind the law in any way to justify families being torn apart," Jackson said during a visit to Phoenix. "It's fundamentally immoral, and it's also unnecessary."

Jackson also condemned Congress for failing to pass immigration reforms. A bipartisan bill passed by the Senate in June has stalled in the House.

Jackson spoke at El Portal, a restaurant owned by Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, a Democrat running for Congress in District 7.

Jackson joined members of the Arizona Black/Brown Coalition, including Pastor Warren Stewart of First Institutional Baptist Church and members of the group Puente Movement, which on Thursday also protested outside the Phoenix offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Standing behind Jackson were several dozen people with family members who face deportation and are being held in detention.

Obama, whose administration has deported a record 2 million people, has ordered a review of his deportation policy to make it more humane in the face of criticism.

But last week, 22 Senate Republicans sent a letter to Obama expressing concern that "the changes under consideration would represent a near complete abandonment of basic immigration enforcement and the notion that the United States has enforceable borders."

Guess this proves that Jesse Jacson has no interest in improving the lives of black Americans. It has been well established that no one would suffer from the legalization of 12-20 million illegal immigrants more than black Americans.
