WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) - The director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said on Monday he will step down at the end of July to go to the private sector after heading the agency for four years.

"I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together during that time and look with awe on the incredible progress ICE has made as an agency," ICE Director John Morton said in making the announcement in an internal message to employees that was made available to Reuters.

"ICE has truly come of age and become an innovative, leading force in federal law enforcement."

Morton has served as director of ICE, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, since May 2009.

John Morton, director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will leave the agency by the end of July and join a financial services company, USA Today reported Monday.

Alan Gomez writes Morton will join Capital One as senior vice president and compliance head based in the firm’s McLean, Va., headquarters.

Morton served at ICE for four years, where he helped the federal government deport illegal immigrants, according to USA Today.

Capital One spokeswoman Tatiana Stead told the publication Morton will aim to help the company drive its compliance strategy.

The outgoing ICE director is a 20-year government veteran and previously served at the Justice Department.

In 2011, Morton outlined a policy for the ICE to use prosecutorial means in deporting certain groups, including those who are considered threats to national security, having criminal offenses and unauthorized immigrants, USA Today reported.
