Judge upholds Arizona voting law requiring proof of citizens

Judge upholds Arizona voting law requiring proof of citizenship

A federal judge ruled today that key parts of an Arizona law requiring proof of citizenship to vote are constitutional and don't violate federal or state law.

U.S. District Court Judge Roslyn Silver issued a summary judgment against nine of the plaintiffs' claims, including cornerstone complaints that the law known as Proposition 200 violates the National Voter Registration Act and constitutes a poll tax. Issues still outstanding and potentially headed to trial include the claim that Prop. 200's ID requirements disproportionately impact minority voting.

Secretary of State Jan Brewer hailed the order as a "big victory for the people of Arizona." She promised to continue defending the law if the case is appealed by plaintiffs that include the Arizona Advocacy Network and Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Prop. 200 has been the source of controversy since it began as a citizens initiative in 2004. Supporters said the measure was needed to reduce voter fraud, but opponents have long called that concern overblown.

Rather than merely blocking undocumented immigrants from the ballot box, critics maintain the law has also deterred some legal citizens who lack identification to prove their citizenship.

The law requires people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote, as well as legal ID when casting a ballot.

I would love this policy to spread nation-wide. Voter fraud is a real threat, and this kind of policy would be reassuring. Then we have to work on the voting machine danger.

I just contacted our traitorous Texas governor asking that a similar law be passed in Texas. I am not holding my breath after his remarks in Mexico City a few days ago. I am very happy for Arizona. Always wanted to see Arizona...maybe it is time for a change.

Good for that Judge. Actually upholding the law instead of making it up.

This is just plain common sense and should be expected to be in place. But it's fairly plain that these groups push to have it repealed because it would take away their ability to manipulate elections. Without fraud some people would never win an election. In Tn., over 300 dead people voted for one candidate in the last legislative election. Was it just a coincidence that her family owed a FUNERAL HOME???!! (Her brother was kicked out of the Senate for taking bribes. He was sentenced yesterday to 5 1/2 years in prison.) The election was thrown out. Wanna guess which party??? Why is it only liberal democrats who oppose these laws and rules???

Everybody in TN has to show an ID, regardless of age, to buy beer or any alcoholic beverage, but NOT to vote.

Yep.......it's a great victory for AZ!!!

Can you imagine.....trying to compare ID requirements to a poll tax? And claiming that people with a legal right to vote will be denied that right because they cannot prove citizenship? How is it that someone who is a legal citizen would be unable to prove it, for Pete's sake?

Stupid arguments like that are no different than open admission of voter fraud!!!!

Thank goodness for Judge Silver!!! At least there are still some judges left with integrity and not willing to side with illegals.
