Kansas hotel owner sentenced to 21 months for employing illegal aliens

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A suburban Kansas City hotel co-owner was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to nearly two years in prison for employing illegal aliens.

This sentence resulted from an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the U.S. Department of Labor, the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) and the Overland Park (Kansas) Police Department.

Rhonda R. Bridge, 42, of Overland Park, Kansas, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for employing illegal aliens, who were paid less than other employees. In addition to her prison sentence, Bridge also agreed to forfeit her interest in two hotels and the funds derived from the crime.

Bridge and her husband, Munir Ahmad Chaudary, 53, also of Overland Park, had each previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens for personal gain. In their pleas they admitted employing illegal aliens at the following two hotels they owned:

    • Clarion Hotel at 7000 W. 108th in Overland Park
    • Clarion Hotel at 11828 NW Plaza Circle in Kansas City, Missouri

Chaudary and Bridge lowered their hotels’ operating costs and put themselves at a competitive advantage by not paying social security, workers compensation and unemployment insurance for the illegal aliens.

According to court records, the investigation began in December 2011 when HSI special agents and agents with the state’s Department of Revenue received information that the owners of the hotels were employing foreign nationals who were not lawfully present in the United States. In June 2012, an undercover agent posing as an illegal alien got a job at the Overland Park hotel. He was hired even though he told his employers he was not authorized to work in the United States.

In 2011 and 2012 the defendants filed false and fraudulent Quarterly Wage Reports and Unemployment Tax Returns with the Kansas Department of Labor, in which they underreported the number of employees at the Overland Park hotel, the amount of total wages paid and the amount of unemployment taxes due.

Bridge is the third person to be sentenced in the case. Judith Vanzant, a hotel manager, and Syed Naqvi, a Pakistani native who worked as a desk clerk, have already been sentenced.

Co-defendant Munir Ahmad Chaudary is awaiting sentencing.

I would almost bet money that the prison sentence was not given for hiring illegal immigrants. I'm betting the only reason the lady is going to prison is because she was paying the illegals less wages than the legal employees, possibly even less than minimum. Yes, I did noticed that the U.S. Department of Labor was involved in the investigation.

The Obama administration's priority is to protect the rights of illegal aliens, which means the abuse of illegal immigrants in the work place will not be tolerated!

These people were running a business which I\was much more than just skirting the law with their hiring policy.

Putting scum like this in prison sends a strong message to anybody else who might be similarly inclined. Fines are just another cost of doing business, but nobody want to go to prison. We may have to repeat this case, but eventually the word should get out that it's not wise to hire illegals, when Americans are available.

That's exactly what I'm saying. This lady was not prosecuted because she hired illegals (not in my opinion), she was prosecuted because whe was paying them less wages than legal workers. You're right, anyone that hires an illegal should be prosecuted. However, the Obama administration doesn't care about the law. Their main interest these days seem to be all about protecting the illegal alien, which is wrong!

Not only did she get prison, she lost her 2 hotels and her money, putting her out of business.
Bridge also agreed to forfeit her interest in two hotels and the funds derived from the crime.

    American jobs for American workers

It's not wise or legal to hire illegal aliens at all, whether Americans are available at low wages or not. Employers who claim they can't find employees are liars, there are more than ample American employees in the United States. You may have to hire outside of your area, but that shouldn't be a problem, because if you're people from outside of the United States, then you can most certainly hire people from outside of Kansas City, like Chicago or St. Louis or Detroit to work in your Kansas City business. Americans have been leaving their hometowns for centuries to find work. Always have, always will, because there is no job that an American won't do, they just won't do them for illegal or unfair wages, which is why we were once the nation with the highest standard of living in the world that benefited every economic sector of our economy, not just profiteers trying to improve their bottom line by breaking the law and cheating workers and competitors alike.

Kansas hotel owner sent to prison for hiring undocumented immigrant workers

Published March 09, 2015 Fox News Latino

    • GETTY

KANSAS CITY, KAN. (AP) – A suburban Kansas City hotel owner was sentenced Monday to 27 months in prison in a case that highlights the U.S. Justice Department's shift to targeting employers who knowingly hire immigrants not authorized to work in the United States.

Munir Ahmad Chaudary, 53, and his wife pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to encourage immigrants to reside unlawfully in the United States. His 42-year-old wife, Rhonda R. Bridge, was sentenced last month to 21 months imprisonment.

The government is also seeking forfeiture of their Clarion hotels in Overland Park, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri.

"I hope Kansas business owners are listening," U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a news release. "You can go to prison for knowingly employing undocumented workers. Violating federal law is not a good business strategy."

Prosecutors say that the couple replaced lawfully employed workers with immigrants not authorized to work in the United States to cut their labor costs by 40 percent. Not only were the illegal workers paid a lower wage, but the owners also did not pay the employer's share of Social Security. They didn't pay worker's compensation, unemployment insurance and other employee benefits, or withhold federal or state income taxes from the workers' pay.

"The Chaudarys sought to game the system and gain an unfair business advantage over their legitimate competitors by hiring illegal aliens at cut-rate wages," Gary Hartwig, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Chicago, said in a news release.

The U.S. attorney's office said their investigation began in 2011 when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Kansas Department of Revenue received information the hotels were unlawfully employing foreign workers. An undercover agent was hired in June 2012 even though he told his employers he was not authorized to work in the United States.
