KLTV Investigates: East Texas taxpayer dollars spent on undocumented inmates

    • According to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, East Texas counties collectively spent more than $795,000 housing undocumented inmates last year.

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -Texas county jails spent more than $77 million housing undocumented immigrants last year, according to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. Starting at book-in, an inmate that's determined to be undocumented is carefully tracked.

“Local counties can call immigration when they arrest somebody that they believe is not here legally,” says immigration attorney and advocate Jose Sanchez.

“Then, there's another interview process and [ICE] determines whether or not to place a hold on that individual,” says Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano.

Sheriff Cerliano says inmates under a detainer stay in jail until federal officials can take them into custody.

“Your local tax dollars are footing the bill for that,” he says.

Sheriff Cerliano says housing inmates at the Gregg County jail costs roughly $30.94 per inmate per day, whether they're citizens or not.

“There is no reimbursement under the [ICE] detainer program,” he says.

According to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, East Texas counties collectively spent more than $795,000 housing undocumented inmates last year.

“The only reimbursement program that we can apply for, and we do participate in that, is the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program,” says Sheriff Cerliano.

He says the program provides a small reimbursement, but it's only a fraction of the more than $40,000 spent by Gregg County last year.

“As an attorney doing immigration and doing criminal law, on a daily basis I get phone calls from people getting ICE detainers in East Texas,” says Jose Sanchez.

But Sanchez says that's just too much.

“Close to 70% of the ICE detainers that have been performed by the counties around the United States have been on petty offenses like no driver license, no insurance, no seatbelt, [and] failure to ID. To me, it's a waste of money of the tax dollars that we're spending on these petty offenses compared to just going after the felonies,” says Sanchez.

There is no cost too high to enforce US immigration law. The cost of not doing so has debilitated the lives of American citizens and bankrupted our treasury.

They should send a huge bill to the poultry corporations in that area. They are the primary reason there are so many illegals in the area.

Hand ALL illegals and Visa overstays into the custody of ICE and place them in Federal Tent City on Federal Land with Federal Judges to try their cases.

ALL minor's get sent directly back to their President, let their country set up facilities for them.

Get the criminals out of the State and Local jurisdiction, out of our local jails and prisons, and alleviate the costs to the local taxpayers. Alleviate the overcrowding of local jails and courts.

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

I reread this article and I think it is pure propaganda.

It is designed to give the impression these people have done nothing more than be here illegally - as if that isn't enough - BUT

If they were arrested for a crime, why aren't they handled just like any other criminal?

We do prosecute and incarcerate illegal aliens. Texas even executed one a few years ago.

So, what is all this fluff about 'holding' them. They have committed a crime, they should be processed just like any other criminal.

They are pretending that 'holding' them is their only option. It isn't.
I'm wondering how many people have the idea that maybe illegals can't be charged and incarcerated. That would be an interesting survey.

Yes, we would have the costs of having them in prison, but what's the cost of having them free? You can't put a price on that - and free is what they will be if they are simply deported.

Also, unless they are actually tried and convicted of a crime, no one will know what a danger they are.

What do these people have to loose when they commit a crime in this country?
A few days as a 'detainee' - then a free trip home for a short vacation - then they are back here again, with no real blight on their record.

Actually, all this 'we can/can't detain' is just a lot of smoke. You arrest someone for a crime, charge them, try them, jail them.

This is a big slight of hand - they wave all the 'detainers', etc., so no one will remember they have committed a crime. That way no one thinks to ask why they aren't being treated as any other criminal.

Ask if some criminal committed a crime in Gregg County, and was not an illegal, what would they do? Would they 'detain' them? - or would they prosecute them?

    That's insanity.
