Nice attack: Two more arrests by French police

Nice attack: Driver 'researched route' earlier in week

The Tunisian man who drove his lorry into crowds of people in Nice researched the route in the days before the attack, French media have reported.

The reports say Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove through the seafront promenade area of the French city on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation.

More than 80 people died when he ploughed his vehicle into people celebrating Bastille Day on Thursday.

Six people are being held in connection with the killings.

The latest, an Albanian couple who have not been identified, were arrested on Sunday morning, French judicial sources said.

Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was shot dead by police when his vehicle's path along the Promenade des Anglais was eventually halted.

Europe 1 radio said CCTV footage from the days beforehand showed him driving through the area in the lorry, closely observing the scene.

On the day itself, Lahouaiej-Bouhlel phoned his brother in Tunisia during the afternoon, sending a photograph of himself among the crowds, Reuters news agency reported.

"That last day he said he was in Nice with his European friends to celebrate the national holiday," the brother, Jabeur, said, adding that in the photo "he seemed very happy and pleased, he was laughing a lot".

France has called up 12,000 police reservists to boost security in the wake of the killings.

A BBC correspondent in Nice says the beaches and cafes are busy again and the promenade has been re-opened.

Many people have taken the opportunity to leave tributes or pay their respects to those, including 10 children, who were killed.

An impressive air of normality in much of tourist-packed Nice is deceptive. As well as grief, bewilderment hangs in the sea air.

There are tears, hugs and silence at the mountain of candles, flowers and cuddly toys on the beach promenade, where joggers stop and parents bring young children to read the messages.

A large white banner says: Why children? And, in a child's handwriting: Why do you want war?

The bloodstains on the tarmac are gradually disappearing. The lampposts the lorry smashed into will be replaced.

But for those who knew or loved the victims, things will never be the same. More armed police and soldiers guarding the streets will serve as a reminder.

Amid the fear and sadness, and the unanswerable questions, defiance acts as a source of comfort.

He will never defeat us, says one message on the promenade. Another reads: Love defeats hate.

Lahouaiej-Bouhlel's estranged wife, who was detained on Friday, was released on Sunday.

Those still being held are said to be close associates of the killer but have not been identified.

French President Francois Hollande has called the attack terrorism and officials have said investigators will seek to find out whether the Tunisian had links with extremist groups.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Lahouaiej-Bouhlel seemed to have been "radicalised very quickly".

French Muslims in Nice describe tensions in the communityHe was unknown to French intelligence services although he had been in trouble with the police for threatening behaviour, violence and petty theft.

Tunisian security sources have told the BBC he visited Tunisia frequently, the last time eight months ago.

It is not known if he trained in Syria or had any help planning the attack.

So-called Islamic State said the attacker was acting in response to its calls to target civilians in countries that are part of the anti-IS coalition.

Eighty-five of those injured remain in hospital; 29 are in intensive care and 18 of those are listed as critical.

Bastille Day action film pulled from French cinemas after Nice attacks

Starring Idris Elba as an ex-CIA agent, Bastille Day concerns a terrorist plot to bomb Paris
    Telegraph Reporters 17 JULY 2016 • 12:39PM

    T
he action movie Bastille Day, in which Idris Elba stars as an ex-CIA agent trying to thwart a terrorist plot to bomb Paris, has finally been pulled from French cinemas, days after the lorry attack in Nice.

According to Variety, the production and distribution company Studiocanal suspended trailers and took down posters for the film on Friday, out of respect for the victims. It left the decision over whether or not to screen the film at all to the cinema chains. Yesterday, however, Studiocanal asked cinemas to stop screening the film.

Alongside Elba, Bastille Day stars Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden. It was released in the UK in April and in France on Wednesday, the day before the Nice attack. Originally, it was slated to appear much earlier in the year but the Paris attacks in November 2015 caused the release date to be postponed

The film is directed by James Watkins, whose 2012 thriller The Woman in Black scooped $128.5 million worldwide. Bastille Day, however, has made just $9.8 million so far.

Before Studiocanal insisted that the film be pulled from cinemas, Jocelyn Bouyssy, the director of multiplex chain CGR, told Variety why he was continuing to screen it.

“We hesitated [over pulling] Bastille Day. We decided to keep it because we haven’t received any complaints. The film’s narrative is very different from the attack that happened in Nice and we’re showing many films with violence of all kinds,” Bouyssy said. “If we start pulling violent movies because they show this or that we’re basically giving in. We must be strong and keep on living.”

NICE Jihadi Took Selfie LAUGHING In Crowd Before Attack

ByPAMELA GELLER on July 17, 2016

Motive unknown? The elites are killing us. Literally.

This jihadi was laughing and excited because 72 virgins were waiting around the corner for him. Why the selfie? Mohamed Bouhlel was producing images for the ummah. It’s what they do. It’s a recruitment tool.

The media has declared that the Nice jihad murderer was “not a Muslim,” according to his cousin. The evidence? The cousin says: “Bouhlel was not religious. He did not go to the mosque, he did not pray, he did not observe Ramadan. He drank alcohol, ate pork and took drugs. This is all forbidden under Islam. He was not a Muslim, he was a s***. He beat his wife, my cousin, he was a nasty piece of work.”

Robert Spencer explains, “Does all that really mean that Bouhlel was not a Muslim? No. If he really did not attend mosque, did not pray, did not observe Ramadan, drank alcohol, ate pork and took drugs, all that means is that he was a bad Muslim. He could at some point have awakened and thought, I’m headed for hell. What great deed can I perform that will outweigh all my evil deeds? And the answer to that question, of course, is jihad, the greatest of all deeds.

“And that he beat his wife is hardly a sign that he was not a Muslim, since the Qur’an commands that women from whom men fear disobedience should be beaten (4:34).

“Do we know if any of Walid Hamou’s assertions are actually true? No. And after all the misinformation we saw coming out in the wake of the Orlando jihad massacre — the false claims that jihad murderer Omar Mateen was gay and acting out of revenge, etc. — these claims may very well be false as well.”

Lorry Killer ‘Took Selfie In Crowd Before Attack’ SKY News, July 17, 2016 (thanks to Todd):

Mohamed Bouhlel is said to have called his brother hours before the atrocity and sent a picture of himself laughing in Nice.

    >Mohamed Bouhlel and the lorry he used in the attackAround 85 victims remain in hospital and 18 of them – including one child – are in a life-threatening condition.

Meanwhile, a man and a woman were held in Nice on Sunday morning.

Their arrests follow the detention of five other people since the tragedy, including Bouhlel’s estranged wife. She has now been released from custody.

Authorities are trying to determine if he acted alone but the country’s prime minister has said he had been radicalised quickly.

Several people, among hundreds who have been questioned, said Bouhlel showed signs of being religious, according to a judicial source.

But some of his friends and relatives have claimed he smoked, drank and never visited mosques.

Jihadist group Islamic State has said the lorry driver was one of their “soldiers”.

Officials have yet to produce evidence that Bouhlel had any links to IS.
