    Lowcountry Immigrants Fearful

    Lowcountry Immigrants Fearful

Friday May 19, 2006 5:13pm Reporter: Kelsey Kirkpatrick Posted By: Kelsey Kirkpatrick

    Charleston, SC -

All in one week, an officer shoots a migrant on the US-Mexico border. And here at home, a fatal police chase sends a Hispanic man slamming his car into a tree. The man was carrying only a Mexican ID and no other documentation has been found on him.

Josefina Alonso moved to Charleston from Mexico 22 years ago, and she says Hispanics with families are the ones most scared, because they don’t want to be deported and separated from their families.

“I see people staying home more,” she says. “They’re not going out, they’re not working as much. I’ve talked to several friends that have nightclubs here in Charleston, and they’re not as busy as they used to be.”

They say they're scared of some of the tough talk they are hearing.

The federal government is proposing 370 miles of fences on the border, along with national guard troops patrolling it. And although they may be far from the border, South Carolina immigrants are listening.

“Let them come out of the shadow,” suggests U.S.

Senator Lindsey Graham, who represents South Carolina. “[They should] start paying taxes, make them pay a fine, require them to take an English exam and if they commit a crime, they will be deported.”

    Sen.

Graham says it will take 18 months to document all of the undocumented workers, but he is proposing the U.S. does just that. He wants migrant workers to have a tamper-proof identification card that will document the workers.

Already, some may be coming out of the shadows. Alonso says where she files taxes, she is seeing more Hispanics coming to file.

“A lot of people are starting to do their taxes,” she says. “So they can have proof that they’ve been here within the last five years.”

But she says, the more the government scares away Hispanics, the more the U.S. economy will suffer from their lost business.

“A lot of people are keeping their money in their pocket, just incase,” she says. They don’t want to invest anymore, buy cars, and that’s kind of hurting the United States.”

Here in Charleston, city officials are trying to find ways to make the Hispanic community feel more comfortable, and at home. They are working with areas like New York and Washington, D.C. to put together a resource list for Hispanic community members. They say their dispatch officers will offer them to any Spanish-speaking person who needs help.

Senorita, you are not as indispensable and as valuable to the economy as you've been led to believe.

We did fine before you came and we'll do lots better when you get yourself on the correct side of the border.

Hasta la vista! Goodbye, good luck, don't write home and don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya! :P

The good folks of Charleston need to be looking for new city officials & the state another senator.

Josefina, hon, you know we'd really love to help you out to keep the family together on the other side of the border!

Would you look at that! What more proof does anyone need to realize that these people have been coached and KNEW that this crap was going to hit the fan here?

These people were told they were going to get amnesty!! or they wouldn't be filing taxes WITH ILLEGAL DOCUMENTATION. How else is one going to file taxes? NO SS# I think not!!!

    Illegal Immigrants = Illegal [[color=red]b]Invaders[/b][/col

These illegal INVADERS are a formidable enemy that has been completely entrenched within our country. An invasion force of approx 20 million uninvited aliens do NOT pledge allegiance to the United States. They pledge allegiance to what they can STEAL from the American taxpayer. They slither in and out of shadows like the CRIMINALS that they are. ALL DATA that I have studied clearly proves that illegals cost more to the US taxpayers then they generate in revenues.

Our wonderful El Presidente Bush is going to try to force the amnesty of these CRIMINALS down the throats of all of us who are LEGAL US citizens. He says that the illegals have to go to the back of the line. WHAT A LIEING HYPOCRATE HE IS!!! NO ILLEGALS ARE HAVING TO LEAVE OUR COUNTRY. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS SIT STILL WITHIN OUR BORDERS AND BUSH IS GOING TO MAKE THEM US CITIZENS!! BUSH IS A BOLD FACED LIAR!!

Yet where are the marches of US citizens to tell our elected but bought off politicians that they had better honor their most solemn oath of representing the WILL OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, AND AT THE SAME TIME TELL ALL ILLEGAL INVADERS TO GET OUT OF OUR COUNTRY OR WE ARE GOING TO START DEPORTING THESE CRIMINALS, ONE BUSLOAD AT A TIME!!!

Continue to send the message to the politicians that THERE WILL BE NO!!!! AMNESTY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM FOR ANY OF THESE ILLEGAL INVADERS!!

Start by enforcing the employment laws THAT ARE ALREADY ON THE BOOKS!! AND ANY EMPLOYER WHO HIRES AN ILLEGAL WILL BE FINED, PUNISHED, AND POTENTIALLY PUT OUT OF BUSINESS.

ILLEGALS CONTRIBUTE NOTHING TO OUR COUNTRY BEYOND DISEASE, CRIME, AND OTHER FORMS OF LAWLESSNESS!!!

Yes they want to get their taxes done so they can get that tax credit. With regard to proving they have been here five years if they file for last year that is only one year not five. In trying to prove they have been here for five years they would have to expose themselves for the fraudulent social security numbers and documents they were using. Of course our government will include that in the $2,000 fine imposed that is supposed to cover everything including the social services they used for free as well. Boy I wish $2,000 went that far for me
Freedom isn't free... Don't forget the men who died and gave that right to all of us....

She probably filed taxes for the earned income credit. Just one more turn of the screw for US citizens.

I think they can use old water bills, electric bills, etc., to prove how long they've been in the country. There'll probably be a run on copier paper now as they to fake those too.
