MA immigrants rally against Republican-backed proposal

MA immigrants rally against Republican-backed proposal

The proposal requires state public housing applicants to prove they're in this country legally

BOSTON (WWLP) – Massachusetts immigrants took over the State House steps, rallying against a Republican-backed proposal that requires state public housing applicants to prove they are in this country legally.
“We need to stop these anti-immigrant bills. We need to focus on the human part; we’re talking about human beings,” said REACH Beyond Domestic Violence’s Gladys Ortiz.

“We need to stop these anti-immigrant bills. We need to focus on the human part; we’re talking about human beings,” said REACH Beyond Domestic Violence’s Gladys Ortiz.
Immigration supporters say such a proposal would leave many immigrants with nowhere to live, especially domestic violence victims trying to get away from an abuser. HarborCOV (Communities Overcoming Violence)’s Michael Moshier told 22 News, “many immigrant survivors have so few options that they feel that they have no choice but to stay in an abusive relationship.”
Right now, people do not have to provide a social security number, or alien registration number, to apply for public housing. The lead sponsor of the amendment, Republican State Representative Shaunna O’Connell believes it is the people rallying who are putting families in danger. She argues it is a public safety issue because housing authorities cannot run criminal background checks on undocumented immigrants.
“It puts everyone in our community in danger when there are illegal aliens living here that have not had criminal background checks,” said State Rep. O’Connell (R-Taunton).
The housing authority gives preference to U.S. Veterans, the disabled and the elderly. Many times, there is no distinction between an American citizen applying for public housing or an illegal immigrant.
The proposal is expected to be up for debate next week when the Massachusetts House negotiates their budget.

To"wwlp:" Why would immigrants object to being identified? Apparently you meant illegal aliens?

A couple other times today I have commented about education dollars wasted about language skills! Do I even have to say more about that? Preponderance of evidence is very convincing today. (No more Pell grants.)

I side with State Representative Shaunna O'Connell, by the way!

Oh that's just perfect, now they're whining about their loser "relationships" with nowhere to live. Well,I have an idea, go back to your country and get away from him/her.
