SOMERVILLE — A former Bernardsville man will soon be deported to Guatemala after being sentenced last week on charges of repeatedly stabbing another man with a broken beer bottle last year in the borough.

Nelson Gomez-Marroquin, 29, was sentenced on Friday to 364 days in the Somerset County Jail, and he will receive credit for 341 days of time served. Since he has been living in the country illegally, Gomez-Marroquin will be immediately deported, Superior Court Judge Robert Reed said.

But the judge warned Gomez-Marroquin that if he returns to the U.S. illegally, he will sentence him to 10 years in state prison.

Reed said that “no matter how bad things are in Guatemala, they’re likely to be worse over a decade in New Jersey state prison.”

Gomez-Marroquin had pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with the May 19 attack.

Following a 911 call made shortly before 3 a.m., officers responded to the area of Anderson Hill Road and Olcott Square, where they found the 20-year-old victim covered in blood, prosecutors said. The man had stab wounds to his chest and both arms, prosecutors said.

The victim later told detectives that Gomez-Marroquin attacked him with a broken beer bottle on Prospect Street in Bernardsville, prosecutors said. The victim was treated for his injuries at Morristown Memorial Hospital and subsequently released, prosecutors said.

Detectives found Gomez-Marroquin at his residence and took him into custody, prosecutors said.
