Man gets 7 1/2 years in prison for intoxicated manslaughter

A man convicted of intoxicated manslaughter in the death of a Central El Paso teen almost two years ago has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.

Alejandro Montoya Sierra, 28, pleaded guilty in the 171st District Court as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Police arrested him on Dec. 16, 2008, after he caused the crash that severely injured Ivan Chavez, 19, in the 400 block of Shadow Mountain. Chavez, who had been a student at El Paso High School, died on Dec. 23, 2008, after his parents decided to take him off of life support and donate his organs.

Police said Montoya Sierra, who was legally intoxicated at the time, had been driving north on Shadow Mountain Drive when he lost control of his car, drove over a median and collided head-on with an SUV traveling south.

Montoya Sierra has been jailed in the El Paso County Jail Annex since his arrest and will receive credit for time served. Because he is not a U.S. citizen, he faces deportation upon his release from prison.

During his plea hearing, Montoya Sierra told District Judge Bonnie Rangel that he was born in Guanajuato, Mexico.
