Man Guilty To Being Accessory In Police Shooting
(AP) DENVER A man accused of helping a friend hide evidence and flee after the slaying of a Denver police officer was sentenced Friday to a maximum 12 years in prison, prosecutors said Friday.

Jaime Arana-Del Angel, 28, in March pleaded guilty to accessory to crime, said Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney's office.

Kimbrough said prosecutor Bruce Levin asked for the maximum sentence, saying Arana-Del Angel's actions caused the massive manhunt that resulted in suspect Raul Gomez-Garcia being able to flee to Mexico, which complicated extradition hearings and resulted in a second-degree murder charge.

Mexico does not allow extradition of suspects who face charges carrying life in prison or death sentences. Prosecutors were considering filing first-degree murder charges against Gomez-Garcia, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Gomez-Garcia is suspected of killing Detective Donald Young and wounding Young's partner, officer Jack Bishop, while the officers were working off-duty as security officers last year.

Kelly Young, Young's widow, also asked for the maximum sentence.

Police suspect Gomez-Garcia shot the officers after they denied him re-entry to a baptismal party.

Gomez-Garcia trial on charges of second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder is scheduled for Sept. 5.
