Man who abducted infant daughter may face deportation

Boyfriend upset about crying child

ANDERSON, Ind. — A man who abducted his 5-month-old baby girl after allegedly assaulting her mother on Tuesday may face deportation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials placed a detainer on Hung Vi Ong barring his release from the Madison County Jail.

ICE spokeswoman Gail Montenegro said the detainer was requested “because we believe he may be eligible for deportation.”

That news was delivered as the 32-year-old Vietnamese national was being arraigned Wednesday by Madison Circuit Court Magistrate Stephen Clase.

Ong was charged with one count of Class C felony intimidation, and another count of Class A misdemeanor domestic battery.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Anderson police responded to the Autumn Ridge apartments office on Tuesday afternoon where a woman identified as Ong’s girlfriend had sought refuge.

The woman told police she and Ong had been arguing and he became physically abusive. According to court documents, he choked her, threw her against a wall and punched her in the right eye.

Ong also allegedly threatened to stab his girlfriend and infant daughter with a knife, according to the affidavit. After that, he fled with the child.

He agreed to release the baby to a family friend shortly after driving off. Ong turned over the child to the friend at a coffee shop on Scatterfield Road. But he fled the scene before police could arrive.

After extensive negotiations with relatives, according to the affidavit, Ong agreed to turn himself in and returned to the apartment complex where police were waiting.

Ong told police he became angry because his girlfriend had insulted his family, according to the affidavit. In addition, Ong said he used the knife to scare his girlfriend so she wouldn’t leave him with the baby.

“The crying baby gave him a headache to the point that it drove him crazy,” Ong said, according the court document.

In addition to the charges he now faces here, Ong is also wanted on a misdemeanor larceny charge in California, Anderson Police Department spokesman Detective Joel Sandefur said.
