MASS - Robichaud: Bill drives home high cost of illegals

How much more is illegal immigration going to cost commonwealth taxpayers?

The sky is the limit if H. 3285 — the Safe Driving Bill — passes.

Wednesday the Transportation Committee will be hearing this legislation that will allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

Which begs the question: How did Uncle Omar get a license in the first place?

Openly granting these licenses will have much broader ramifications.

Our state doesn’t need any more initiatives to make it a magnet for illegal immigrants. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, there are 220,000 illegals living in Massachusetts. Twenty-five percent are on welfare. That means 55,000 who don’t belong here are collecting benefits from the state. If each one gets $1,000 in taxpayer-funded payments, that equals to $55 million per month or $660 million per year. If they get $2,000 in benefits, we are talking about $1.2 billion.

Two years ago State Rep. Jim Lyons had to shut down the House to force Gov. Deval Patrick to disclose how much the state is spending on health care for illegal immigrants.

It is a whopping $93 million for Mass Health and $175 million for the Health Safety Net.

By executive order, Gov. Patrick overrode the law prohibiting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, and thus, making it better to be illegal than to be from Rhode Island.

Jessica M. Vaughan, director of policy studies for the Center for Immigration Studies, estimates that taxpayers are spending anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 per illegal immigrant student, depending on the school.

Using her estimates, if just 100 illegals get the break, it will costs us $300,000 to $1.5 million for one year.

What if there are 1,000 illegal students?

“The so-called Safe Driving Bill has nothing to do with making anyone safer,” said Vaughan.

“The only goal is to make life easier for illegal aliens by issuing them licenses so they can get to jobs that should be held by Americans or legal immigrants. It will also give an official ID to people the state can’t really identify properly.

“The states that have already tried this found they became magnets for illegal aliens and other criminals from all over the country to fraudulently claim residence and get a license.”

Once illegal immigrants have licenses, they will have identification, so they can register to vote.

Do they have the same rights as us to vote on our elected officials?

Does it bother anyone else that illegal immigrants are being treated better than the legal residents who pay our hefty taxes? Massachusetts — pro-illegal immigrant, anti-taxpayer.

R.I. Bill creates new license for those in US illegally

Bill creates new license for those in US illegally

    Updated 2:33 pm, Monday, February 3, 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island state lawmaker has introduced a new version of legislation that would allow immigrants to obtain driver's licenses regardless of their legal status.

The proposal by Sen. Frank Ciccone would create a "driving privilege license" for those who otherwise meet normal licensing requirements but aren't in the U.S. legally. It would look different than a regular license and wouldn't be a valid form of identification for state or federal purposes, including voting.

Supporters say immigrants in the country illegally already drive and should be subject to the same licensing rules as other drivers.

Opponents argue the licenses would reward illegal behavior.

Last year's version of the legislation was opposed by Rhode Island State Police, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin and the American Civil Liberties Union.

    NO AMNESTY

Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.
