NC DMV pulls licenses of 13 'Dream Act' immigrants

RALEIGH, NC -- The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is canceling driver's licenses mistakenly issued to 13 illegal immigrants.

Federal authorities began accepting applications in August under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which grants work permits to immigrants brought to the United States as minors without authorization.

North Carolina typically grants driver's licenses to non-citizens with valid federal work papers.

But before anyone under the new program applied for driver's licenses, then-DMV Commissioner Michael Robertson issued orders not to grant any. Robertson asked Attorney General Roy Cooper in September to determine whether doing so would violate state law. Cooper has not yet responded.

DMV spokeswoman Marge Howell said Tuesday 13 people who used DACA papers to get driver's licenses will have those licenses cancelled until the legal issue is settled.

Thirteen down, how many to go?????

BTW, in the past 4-5 years I have had the pleasure of seeing both my kids get their NC driver's license. After all the hoops we had to jump through, and all the many forms of ID (birth cert., bank account, SS#, driver eligibility certificate, etc...) my question is HOW THE HECK DID THE ILLEGALS MANAGE TO GET A DL? I thought we had that problem 'fixed'.

They were DREAM Act kids. The federal government gave them green cards and social security cards so North Carolina gave them licenses, just like most other states are.

The driver license issue
has been settled in some states, Texas, Virginia and Oregon among them, that have said they will allow driver's licenses for immigrants obtaining what the Obama administration calls "deferred action for childhood arrivals."
Arizona and Nebraska have pledged to deny driver's licenses to anyone who benefits from the federal relief.

Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio are planning to provide driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants who get work papers under a new federal policy.

Even in some states that have passed strong anti-illegal immigration laws, such as Georgia, driver's licenses may be available to undocumented immigrants who qualify under the new policy.
Under current Georgia law, people with deferred status can get a license, and that's what the state will do unless it gets different orders, said Susan Sports, spokeswoman for the state's Department of Driver Services.
