Thread: Mexican citizen died in car crash after smuggler fled from La Grulla police

A Mexican citizen died last week after illegally crossing the Rio Grande near La Grulla, according to federal court records.

A La Grulla policeman attempted to stop a gray 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck Thursday near the intersection of West Second Street and Pvt. Leopoldo Longoria Street, according to the criminal complaint.

When the pickup truck didn't stop, the policeman chased the driver — who struck a tree.

The policeman detained two passengers. Border Patrol agents detained another three people nearby.

"All five undocumented aliens (UDAs) were found to be illegally in the United States and citizens of Mexico," according to the criminal complaint. "One undocumented was transported to the Starr County Hospital via ambulance due to injuries observed to his face area. That subject later died at the hospital."

Border Patrol agents arrested the driver, Daniel Salinas, and his brother, Mark Anthony Salinas.

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, questioned the brothers at the Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station.

"Mark Anthony Salinas admitted he and his brother Daniel Salinas have been smuggling undocumented aliens and narcotics for many years," according to the criminal complaint.

Daniel Salinas admitted to transporting at least three people.

"Daniel Salinas further stated that he sped away from La Grulla PD because he panicked and didn't know what to do because he is currently on parole for an evading arrest conviction," according to the criminal complaint.

Both men were charged with bringing in and harboring aliens. They remain in federal custody.

Court records don't list an attorney for Daniel Salinas. An attorney for Mark Anthony Salinas couldn't be reached for comment.
