Federal and state experts on gangs, drug cartels and high-caliber weapons are working with the dozens of local investigators attempting to develop a motive for the ambush of Bexar County Deputy Kenneth Vann, killed while stopped at a traffic light Saturday.
Authorities say they don't yet know if Vann, a 24-year-veteran, was specifically targeted or whether he merely was a target of opportunity, although Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz has said he believes it was the latter.
Brian A. Kinnaird, a San Antonio-based international police consultant, places Vann's death squarely within a disturbingly violent trend, “an indicator that the war on cops going on nationally has now arrived in South Texas.â€NO AMNESTY

'I killed a cop': Informant points finger at friend in deputy death

SAN ANTONIO -- Mark Anthony Gonzalez allegedly confessed to a friend that he shot Bexar County deputy Kenneth Vann, according to an arrest warrant.
"I killed a cop," Gonzalez reportedly told his friend over the phone. "Don't tell no one, not even your wife."
The friend turned confidential informant, leading to Gonzalez's arrest Sunday, deputies said.
As a result, Gonzalez is charged with capital murder of a peace officer. His bond is set at $1.5 million. He remains in jail.
According to the warrant, Gonzalez was in a blue Ford F-150 truck the night Sgt. Vann was killed. He and the confidential informant had gone to do some work in a rural area near Laguna Road.
The friend, who claims he's known the capital murder suspect for more than 20 years, drove to the location in a white pickup truck.
Both vehicles became vehicles of interest during the hunt to find the deputy's killer.
Sgt. Vann was fatally wounded inside his patrol car en route to a call. Investigators said he was shot numerous times at a stoplight at Loop 410 and Rigsby Avenue on May 28.
Investigators described the viscous shooting as an ambush, with Vann never having an opportunity to return fire.
According to the warrant, two different businesses caught vehicles matching Gonzalez's and the informant's on security tape near the crime scene.
Investigators said the two went to do some tire work. While at the Laguna Road location, Gonzalez and another man started target practice with a MP 15 rifle, according to the warrant. It reportedly belonged to Gonzalez.
The arrest document alleges the gun had a 100 round magazine in it, which they fired at a fence post.
According to the warrant, the confidential informant and Gonzalez left that location, and Gonzalez accidentally crashed into the rear of the informant's truck. Investigators said the two were to meet at a nearby restaurant.
Deputies said the informant went to the eating establishment. However, Gonzales allegedly did not. The informant claims his friend turned next to a law enforcement vehicle, he heard pops and as he parked at the eating establishment, the patrol car stopped in the median.
According to the warrant, Gonzalez is alleged to have a weapons safe in his home. In addition, the MP 15 shoots a .223 caliber ammunition. Investigators were looking for weapons that matched the ammunition in Vann's killing.
Deputies found Gonzalez's blue pickup truck at a local dealership waiting to have repairs done.
They compared it to the informant's claims of a collision. Blue paint is reportedly on the vehicle, as described by the informant.
