A Mexican murder suspect the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended in Charlottesville was deported Friday evening, more than six years after the crime he is accused of committing.

Alfredo Santana Miranda, 40, was captured by officials from ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in September on an outstanding Mexican arrest warrant. He is accused of murdering Alcindo Roman Roman in February 2006.

A news release from ICE says that one week after the murder, Miranda, hidden under the backseat of a vehicle, entered the U.S. through the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego. He was discovered and returned to Mexico the same day, but reentered the U.S. illegally on an unknown date, according to the release.

ICE officers in Virginia received a tip about Miranda’s whereabouts, and was subsequently arrested at a Charlottesville hotel.

He was handed over to Mexican law enforcement officials Friday at the Gateway International Bridge Port of Entry in Brownsville, Texas.
