McALLEN - A young Mexican national is facing several charges after he allegedly tried to smuggle a hand grenade into Mexico.

The suspect was sent to a detention center. A judge wants to review a drug test and psychological evaluation performed on the suspect.

Officials said the suspect claims he is 16 years old. The judge wants to confirm that allegation.

The suspect told police on Tuesday that he was trying to smuggle the grenade into Mexico and then sell it to members of the Gulf cartel for $200.

Investigators said the suspect crossed the river and picked up the grenade. At one point, he felt someone was following him and he decided to toss the piece of ordnance into a dumpster at the Whataburger restaurant in Hidalgo.

Police arrested the suspect when he tried to cross back into Mexico.
Explosive disposal experts later determined the grenade was inert.
The suspect will be in court on Oct. 3.
