MEXICAN NATIONAL SENTENCED FOR RUNNING DRUG RING IN WISCONSIN

by BRANDON DARBY 30 Sep 2013

Madison, Wisconsin -- A Mexican national has been sentenced for his role in delivering 50-150 kilograms of cocaine into Wisconsin according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Authorities say he was the leader of the drug trafficking organization.

Emeterio Velazquez, a Mexican national, will serve 20 years in U.S. prison for conspiring to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute and for distribution of cocaine. It is possible he will be deported after his prison sentence is served, although it is uncertain such action will be taken due to proposed comprehensive immigration reform.

Velazquez’s wife was also sentenced to nine years in U.S. prison for the same offense; the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to include the woman’s immigration status in its press release. Velazquez's wife did not receive the same sentence as her husband; his sentence was increased due to his possession of a firearm, making threats of violence, and being a leader of a drug trafficking organization.

Several other men were also sentenced in the case, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office did not provide details as to their immigration status either.
