Autauga Co. grand jury indicts man in deaths of woman, unborn child

PRATTVILLE -- The Autauga County grand jury has indicted a Mexican national with the murder of a Prattville woman and her unborn fetus.

Romer G. Jimenez, 32, faces three murder indictments in the death of Angelica Margarita Gonzalez, 29, court records show. Jimenez was the father of the unborn child, District Attorney Randall Houston said.

Gonzalez was stabbed to death Oct. 4 in the mobile home the couple shared at 1110 Alabama 14 West, Lot 11, reports show. Officers with the Prattville Police Department were called to the home and found her lying on the couch, according to police records.

There were five children ranging in age from 1 to 9 in the home at the time. Jimenez is the father of three of the children, ages 1, 3 and 4, court records show.

Jimenez has been indicted for the murder of Gonzalez and her unborn child, and the reckless murder of the unborn child, Houston said. Jimenez is in the country illegally, and Gonzalez was a legal immigrant, the prosecutor said.

"We handled the indictments this way to cover all aspects of the law," he said. "Miss Gonzalez's death lead to the death of the fetus. We indicted on reckless murder as an included charge because it was his reckless action that caused the death of the fetus."

Jimenez has been held in the Autauga Metro Jail under a $500,000 bondsince his arrest. U.S. Marshal's captured Jimenez in Montgomery the day after the murder was reported. He doesn't have an attorney representing him on the indictments, according to courthouse records.
He is set to appear in circuit court March 9, records show.

This is the first time in the 19th Judicial Circuit that an indictment has been handed down in the death of an unborn fetus, Houston said.
The autopsy showed that Gonzalez was 11 to 13 weeks pregnant with a male child, court records show. Prosecutors believe a domestic disturbance led to the homicide.

"Jimenez told us that he was the father of the child," Houston said. "He should have known that killing the mother of an unborn child would also kill the child."
