Mexico Deploying Hundreds of Federal Officers to Tamaulipas

REYNOSA — Hundreds of Mexican federal officers are about to patrol the streets of Tamaulipas. Their hope is to keep the peace in a region torn apart by cartel violence.
Nine hundred Mexican military soldiers arrived in Reynosa on Wednesday.
Tamaulipas state officials said they hope the troops can keep the region safe, as well as stop criminal activity along the border.
A few days ago, more than 300 federal police officers landed in Tamaulipas. Those officers all arrived with the same mission in mind.
The boost in force comes a week after a deadly shootout in the streets of Reynosa. Ten people were killed in a four-hour gun battle.
The shootout was between an organized criminal group and the Mexican navy, federal police and Tamaulipas task force.
Earlier this month, it was another deadly scene in Tamaulipas, as Mexican authorities found three severed heads in an ice chest. The chest was discovered in an abandoned truck in a shopping center parking lot.
State leaders said they hope increased boots on the ground will help quell the violence.
There is still a travel warning for Mexico in effect for U.S. citizens. This warning comes straight from the U.S. State Department.
The State Department warns of travel into Tamaulipas because of the potential for increased danger.
