Michigan being investigated for fraudulent licenses

Michigan being investigated for fraudulent licenses
By ELISABETH STRILLACCI , Journal Register News Service

NEW BRITAIN -- The Michigan secretary of state’s office, which oversees driver’s licensing in that state, clammed up Friday about an investigation into fraudulently obtained Michigan licenses.
The improper licenses came to light in Connecticut following the arrest of Newington resident Lukasz Olko for vehicular homicide in March.

Olko, who came to the United States several years ago, obtained a Michigan license in 2005, despite living in Connecticut. The address he gave, 2717 Edwin Ave., Hamtramck, is apparently also the registered address for at least 29 other drivers. However, an investigator who went to the address found only a vacant, two-family house.

The issue of false identification documents has been an ongoing problem for Michigan, which until 2004 did not require proof of residency to obtain a license.

According to records in the U.S. District Court in Detroit, three state employees were arrested in Michigan in August 2005 for their involvement in a money-making scheme to provide false documents to persons seeking li-censes.

Kimberly Murray, 32, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit identification document fraud, and Regjean Welch, 26, to fraudulently issuing driver’s licenses. In addition, Andre Donald-son was charged with finding customers for the two women, who both worked for the secretary of state.

The arrests are part of a joint investigation by the FBI, the Immigration and Customs Enforce-ment Bureau and the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General. That investiga-tion continues. It is unclear how many false identification cards or licenses have been issued.

In addition, in 2004, at a policy summit in Washington, a spokesman for the Secret Service noted that two of the 9/11 terrorists had fake Virginia identifications, and one al-Qaida operative was found to have five Michigan licenses.

Meanwhile, New Britain police say a majority of the Michigan licenses they have on file are also registered to addresses in Hamtramck. The small suburb of Detroit has become home for many immigrants, particularly Polish.

Originally established in 1798, Hamtramck was organized as a village in 1901, according to its Web site description.

While a quiet farming town at the turn of the century, the population soared during 1910-20, when it was the fastest-growing community in the nation, spurred by the booming automobile industry.

Thousands of immigrants, mostly of Polish and other European descent, set-tled there and found jobs in the automobile factories.

No one from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office returned calls Friday seeking comment, and an FBI spokesperson said only that if there is any investigation, the department has a policy of not commenting until it is complete. A person at the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security referred questions to the Connecticut State Police, which did not return calls for comment.

Well this problem is going on all over the country. In the Spanish forums they discuss what state is giving licenses to illegals and then they'll drive, or fly, to that state to obtain the license.
